About the fish:
They are sometimes called
Alligator Gar or needle fish but Long Tom is the most common fish around.
Long Toms are long, slender fish and they have two long jaws with sharp teeth.
They are sometimes mixed up with the garfish which only has a lower jaw. Long
Toms can grow much bigger than a garfish. The colour ranges from blue to
black on the back. Long Toms can grow up to lengths of 36inches and weight
of 4kgs.But the common weight is around 2 kgs and less.

When to fish for them:
The Long Tom is mainly
a surface feeder. They either swim in groups or alone
|
|
|
Where to fish for them:
Long Tom can be spoted
near jetty or wind breaker where the water is claim at low tide or high
tide.
|
|
|
Fighting tactics:
Once got hook they are
just like the best sprinter in sport. They usually does not swallow their
baits so be patiance with them. The Long Tom sometimes takes on artifical
baits. Fish meat, prawn meat is the common bait used but I have seen them
gorging read. Ensure that hooks are very sharp. They give resonably good
sport on light line but they tend to be tired out very fast.
