Want to automatically delete spam? Try this!
SmarterMail 3 offers a feature that is intended to identify mail that fits the characteristics of spam. Using a series of settings and filters, SmarterMail rates suspected e-mails as a probability of "low", "medium" and "high". An additional settings allows you to determine what happens when suspected spam is identified.

Before we go any further, please have a quick look at the "Spam Filtering" entries of the SmarterMail manual. Domain Spam Filtering, Anti-Spam Administration and My Spam Filtering.

By default, no action is taken in response to mail that is suspected spam. But override options allow those messages to be identified (with text that is added to the subject line), moved to a junk mail folder, or deleted.

To take advantage of this feature, log in to SmarterMail with your mail administrator account. After logging in, select the "Domain Spam Filtering" option from the "Domain Settings" menu .

Domain Settings

Next, select "Override spam settings for this domain" followed by clicking the "options" tab.

Note: This setting will apply to ALL of your mail accounts for this domain, and each mail account can then personalize the same settings to their own choices - (See the Settings/My Spam Filtering menu option.)

Domain Spam Filtering Override

After clicking the "options" tab, scroll down and the following appears. Shown here are the default settings

Domain Spam Filtering Override

Shown here are a set of "proposed" settings. We offer no assurance that these will not result in losing unwanted mail, but these are the settings that GreyBeard is presently using for our mail.

Domain Spam Filtering Override

At your discretion, set each level of "suspected" spam to the action of your choice, then save the settings ("save" button appears in the upper-right corner of screen.)

As you can see, this account has been set up to add the phrase "LOW SPAM" to that class of mail, move "Medium Spam" to a junk mail folder, and to automatically delete "High Spam". SmarterMail will automatically create a Junk Mail folder for you, and it would be up to each mail user to remember to occasionally browse that folder and examine it for any mail that actually was not spam, and move it to their inbox.

Now the next thing you need to consider is what happens when that "junk mail" folder starts to accumulate. If your mail accounts start to exceed their capacity, such as because the "junk mail" folder is not regularly monitored, SmarterMail will send warnings to your Mail Administrator account. And eventually, if allowed to exceed the capacity, SmarterMail will stop receiving mail. So you need to make certain that the "junk mail" folder is regularly cleared. That is the subject of this tutorial: Domain Folder Auto Clean Settings

That's it! Need more help? Check the SmarterMail manual.
