New International State Port Should Create Nearly 50,000 New Jobs

Posted Thursday, December 14, 2006 at 12:54:32 PM
The proposed North Carolina International Port is expected to bring a massive boost to an already healthy economy. Conservative estimates show that the NC International Port would create nearly 50,000 jobs statewide, and bring in more than $50 million in local and state tax revenue.

The North Carolina International Port will catapult North Carolina into the ranks of major East Coast ports, comparable to Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia. The Authority has hired CH2M Hill, an international engineering firm, to plan, design and construct the new port.

The port is in the preliminary stages of planning, and expects to be able to service the new, much-larger container ships being built now to handle the tremendous growth in container traffic. The International Port will allow us to keep up with the growth in traffic, and with the growth in ship sizes.

Most importantly, the International Port will enable our State to compete more effectively for major manufacturing and assembly plants, comparable to BMW and Daimler Chrysler in South Carolina and Airbus in Alabama.

It is easy to see how the Cape Fear region is growing, and will continue to grow for decades to come. Just another reason for someone to call our beautiful area home.

How do you think the new port will affect growth in Southport?

Southport should benefit from the new state port quite well.

Please give me an estimate of HOA dues if I were to purchase a condo. Does that cover insurance on the building for storms and wind? I currently own home in VA and am thinking of retiring in Southport or coastal town in NC as I have vacationed along the coast many years and grown to love it. If you know of anyone wanting to take 2 canal lots in Nort Port, FL (Sarasota County) as part of a trade let me know. Seriously, any info regarding condo ownership would be appreciated. Price range is up to $220,000.

Victoria,
Typically HOA dues cover insurance for wind and hail damage to the building, however, you are resposible for the interior insurance. For wind, hail and possesions inside your unit expect to pay in the neighborhood of $500 a year for this area, however, this can vary. We are developing two new condominum communities in Southport. HOA dues will be between $2500 and $3000 per year. Please email me or give me a call for further information.

When the new International Port opens, how will the increase is ship traffic and dredging affect the fishing and safety of small boats fishing around the mouth and channel of the inlet?

I am a small-scale investor in residential real estate in Brunswick County. As my wife and I intend to move there, I would like to know how the coming port will affect values and life style in the eastern, as opposed to the western, beach areas of the county. Why do I find much better land prices nearer to Southport and Wilmington, and much higher prices north of Myrtle Beach? Is it the coming port?

Has anyone considered that many of these jobs will be temporary? We should be focusing on bringing more high value added jobs to the area - espcially permenant ones. Are the workers at this port going to be able to afford housing in Brunswick County? Its possible that this calls for proactive planning

I'm seriously considering purshasing property in St. James Plantation and looking for input on whether the investment is wise for a 5 yr return?
