| "Contested Waters: How Maritime Disputes Affect Oil and Gas Operations" |
|
Vinson & Elkins is pleased to announce the publication of a new article by V&E; attorney Justin R. Marlles, which discusses two recent rulings by international tribunals that will impact energy firms with operations in or near disputed maritime boundaries.
Entitled, "International Maritime Boundary Delimitation and Energy Resource Development: Resolution of the Guyana-Suriname and Nicaragua-Honduras Maritime Boundary Cases Requires a New Look at Offshore Activities in Disputed Waters," the article discuss why energy companies should take heed.
In both cases, oil and gas operations owned by international energy companies played starring roles, bringing international judicial scrutiny upon the work of such companies in contested waters. Although the rulings leave some key questions unanswered, the tribunals' conclusions indicate the limits under international law for the exploitation of energy resources in disputed maritime zones, and warrant close attention by oil and gas companies.
