Why Released Fish Die:

The primary reason released fish die is stress. While the physical exertion involved in fighting is a leading cause, additional stress results from removing the fish from water. Stress creates an oxygen deficit in the fish’s internal organs and causes lactic acid to build up and diffuse into the blood. Lactic acid reduces the blood pH and even slight changes in pH disrupt the metabolic process which ultimately kills the fish. If the fish is kept in the water and quickly released with minimum handling, its blood pH usually returns to normal and the fish survives. In addition to stress caused by handling, the fish’s skin is coated with layers of slime which act as a protective coating against bacteria and pathogens. When a fish is touched by an angler (especially with dry hands) the integrity of the mucus is compromised and the fish often suffer a slow death. Check our blog for more on fish mortality, catch and release, and other topics.
HookOff was designed to be the easiest, quickest, most effective and sensitive technique of releasing… without handling the fish or removing it from the water.
