Dedication of New USS Oklahoma Memorial
(Island of Oahu, HI) The USS Oklahoma Memorial on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was dedicated Friday, December 7, 2007. The dedication marked the anniversary of the l941 Japanese attack. The memorial includes 429 standards, each a white marble column bearing the name of a crewmember that lost his life in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Early in the attack, the USS Oklahoma sustained torpedo hits on her port side, causing her to roll over. More than 400 men were trapped inside. The USS Oklahoma suffered the second greatest loss of life of the 21 ships that were hit that day. Congress authorized the memorial in 2006. It has been constructed with the support of USS Oklahoma Memorial Committee and will be managed by the National Park Service as part of the USS Arizona Memorial. Learn more...
The White House Celebrates “Holiday in the National Parks”
(Washington, DC) The National Parks hold great honors at the White House this holiday. “The holiday displays incorporate the wide variety of natural, cultural, and recreational features preserved by the National Park Service.” Two visitor highlights: The White House Christmas Tree in the Blue Room which is adorned with hundreds of handmade ornaments depicting national parks; and, a scaled-down, but architecturally accurate, gingerbread reproduction of the south view of the White House, a unit of the National Park Service.
