ART NEWS IN PARIS

from the 13/ 10/ 2007 until the 28 / 1/ 2008
Gustave Courbet
French painter who led the Realist movement in XIXth-century French painting.

Best known as an innovator in Realism, Courbet was a painter of figurative compositions, landscapes and seascapes.
It has to be said that the artist was not amongst those who never voiced their opinions and lived quietly. Gustave Courbet was a politically active French realist painter and one of the most powerful and also complex painters of the 19th century.
Towards the end of the 1860s, Courbet painted a series of increasingly erotic works, culminating in The Origin of the World (L'Origine du monde) (1866), depicting female genitalia, and The Sleepers (1866), featuring two women in bed. While banned from public display, the works served to increase his notoriety.

Thirty years after the last big monographic exhibition in Paris, the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais are presenting over 120 paintings, some 30 graphic works and around 60 photos.
Examples of subjects to be addressed: the interpretation of hunting scenes, the relationships between the newly emerging art of photography and the work of Courbet, and its decisive influence on artists of his time…Lots of new discoveries in store at the Grand Palais, this autumn!

Giuseppe Arcimboldo
Painter, portraitist and pageant designer at the court of the Hapsburgs

Arcimboldo was born in Milan, the son of a painter who was working at the Duomo. He is known as author of the cartoons for the Stories of St. Catherine of Alexandria for the stained glasses of the Duomo. In 1556 he worked with Giuseppe Meda for frescoes in the Cathedral of Monza.
In 1562 he became the court portraitist to Maximilian II at the Habsburg court in Vienna, and later, to his son Rudolf II at the court in Prague, both of whom seem to have much liked Arcimboldo's extraordinary portraits.
The exhibition at the Luxembourg Museum unveils the mysterious world and strange, extravagant works of this artist, best known for his ingenious portrait heads composed of objects like plants, fruits, flowers and so on.
Besides his composite portraits, the exhibition displays a significant selection of about 40 oils on canvas, drawings, illustrated works and tapestries dating from Arcimboldo’s early days in Lombardy to the years he spent at the Hapsburg court.
