Oak Island is a town located mostly on Oak Island (which also contains the town of Caswell Beach and the North Carolina Baptist Assembly at Fort Caswell) in Brunswick County, North Carolina; a small part of the town extends onto the mainland north of the island's bridge. The population was 6,571 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1999 by the consolidation of the towns of Long Beach and Yaupon Beach. Its main industry is tourism; the town has an average summer population of 30-40,000.

Geography

Oak Island is located at 33°54′59″N, 78°7′50″W (33.916262, -78.130468)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 23.6 km² (9.1 mi²). 20.6 km² (8.0 mi²) of it is land and 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²) of it (12.61%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 6,571 people, 3,076 households, and 2,100 families residing in the town. The population density was 318.3/km² (824.8/mi²). There were 6,651 housing units at an average density of 322.2/km² (834.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.01% White, 0.43% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.18% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.75% of the population.

There were 3,076 households out of which 18.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 25.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.51.

In the town the population was spread out with 15.0% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 22.3% from 25 to 44, 36.4% from 45 to 64, and 21.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 49 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $40,496, and the median income for a family was $48,775. Males had a median income of $30,656 versus $24,759 for females. The per capita income for the town was $23,964. About 4.8% of families and 8.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.7% of those under age 18 and 6.9% of those age 65 or over.

Southport is a city in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,351 at the 2000 census. A popular filming location for television and movies, the small town can be seen in the television shows "Dawson's Creek" and "Spies" and the movies "I Know What You Did Last Summer," "Summer Catch," and "A Walk to Remember," among others. It is the site of the proposed North Carolina International Port, and its marina has been the subject of media attention surrounding its possible sale.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 2,351 people, 1,095 households, and 676 families residing in the city. The population density was 408.9/km² (1,059.0/mi²). There were 1,292 housing units at an average density of 224.7/km² (582.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 76.61% White, 21.78% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.

There were 1,095 households out of which 19.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% were married couples living together, 14.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 35.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.08 and the average family size was 2.65.

In the city the population was spread out with 17.9% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 21.0% from 25 to 44, 31.0% from 45 to 64, and 24.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 49 years. For every 100 females there were 82.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $33,714, and the median income for a family was $45,714. Males had a median income of $34,167 versus $22,857 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,059. Bald Head Island is a village located on the east side of Cape Fear in Brunswick County, North Carolina. Compared to the bustling city of Wilmington to the north, Bald Head Island is a small, somewhat remote village. It is only accessible by ferry from the nearby town of Southport. Cars are not allowed; instead residents drive modified electric golf carts. The village is revered for its picturesque nature and is a popular location for retirement. It was the primary filming location for the successful film Weekend at Bernie's in 1989, as well as being a major location in The Butcher's Wife in 1991. "Old Baldy," its out-of-service lighthouse, is the oldest still standing in the state, built in 1817. The population was 173 at the 2000 census.

There were 599 housing units at an average density of 53.9/km² (139.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 95.38% White, 2.89% African American, 0.58% Native American, and 1.16% from two or more races.

There were 88 households out of which 5.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 77.3% were married couples living together, 3.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.3% were non-families. 18.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.97 and the average family size was 2.17.

In the village the population was spread out with 5.8% under the age of 18, 1.2% from 18 to 24, 11.0% from 25 to 44, 63.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 56 years. For every 100 females there were 106.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.2 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $62,083, and the median income for a family was $56,964. Males had a median income of $51,250 versus $35,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $45,585. About 10.8% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 40.0% of those under the age of eighteen and none of those sixty five or over.

In the town the population was spread out with 11.9% under the age of 18, 1.7% from 18 to 24, 16.4% from 25 to 44, 44.3% from 45 to 64, and 25.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 55 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $59,583, and the median income for a family was $70,000. Males had a median income of $45,833 versus $41,094 for females. The per capita income for the town was $35,114. About 4.4% of families and 4.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.9% of those under age 18 and 2.0% of those age 65 or over.
