Sligo, well situated on the wooded plain of the Garavogue River between Lough Gill and the sea, is north-west Ireland's most important town. Surrounded by a beautiful and interesting region, it is an excellent holiday centre. Except on the seaward side, Sligo is encircled by mountains. Game and coarse fishing in many lakes and rivers is very popular in the region along with golf. Championship courses are available at Rosses Point and at Strandhill (18). Other activities include boats for hire; pitch and putt and tennis. Conducted walking tours around town are available in the summer, and a signposted town trail commences from the tourist office.
