Northwestern Fjord:
A 5-Day Alaska Adventure Tour

Remote, pristine and little visited, Northwestern Fjord in Kenai Fjords National Park is truly one of the world's most remarkable sea kayaking destinations. Paddle amidst icebergs and seals while watching tidewater glaciers calve into protected waters. This stunning location is all the more dramatic and rare due to its relatively recent glacial retreat (When this area was first charted in the 1900's, it was covered by ice a mile deep!).

Considered by many to be the jewel of Kenai Fjords National Park, Northwestern Fjord is a sea kayaking paradise. Calving glaciers, icebergs, abundant marine life, steep granite walls, quiet lagoons, and beautiful valleys await you on this 5-day adventure tour. Unlike any other area along this coast, Northwestern was still covered by glaciers only 85 years ago; still in the early stages of re-vegetation, the freshly scarred rock creates an austere beauty and provides a unique glimpse back in geological time. Paddle amidst bits of icebergs as seals bask in the sun. This Alaska adventure tour creates the kind of impressions that last a lifetime and is appropriate for all experience levels. Tandem (two person) kayaks make it easy for all experience levels to enjoy this pristine area of Kenai Fjords.

This 5-day guided adventure includes:
• Kayaking equipment, instruction and guide service
• Five days of kayaking and hiking
• Four nights camping
• Great camping meals

Northwestern Fjord Adventure Tour Description

DAY 1: Meet at the Adventure Center at 7:45 am. Depart for our morning journey via charter boat through Resurrection Bay amid hanging glaciers, towering mountains, and great expansive vistas. We will watch above for eagles, puffins, cormorants, oyster catchers, and below for sea otters, sea lions, orcas, humpback whales and more as we cruise to our destination of Northwestern Lagoon. At our drop-off we will set up camp before heading out to explore this remote area. Kayak instruction, skill development and paddle techniques will be reviewed on the shoreline before we launch our kayaks.

To maximize our enjoyment of the Fjords we will set up our base camp in a location that provides access to several magnificent tide water glaciers as well as providing us with hiking and exploring opportunities in this wild remote land. We will likely change campsites once during our adventure tour.

DAY 2-4: We begin our intimate exploration of the nooks and crannies of this majestic area. Options are plentiful and your experienced guide will facilitate the Alaska adventure choices which may include:

• A day of paddling among "bergie bits" experiencing the feeling of being in a prehistoric slush cup. Being awakened from our trance by the thunder of calving glaciers rumbling and crashing to the waters surface.
• Your guide may lead you to a scene of raging glacial rivers where the carved landscape is ever changing before us. Hike the terminal and lateral moraines amongst boulders and remnants of times past to the edge of glacial walls of blue ice.
• A visit to "Sea Otter Cove", the name says it all, sea otters & seals basking and swimming
• Paddle for a picnic lunch to a neighboring bay to explore a white sand beach, unique in this austere and glacial carved area

DAY 5: An early breakfast and camp break down will start our day. A morning sea kayak paddle is available before our charter boat returns to whisk us away for our return to civilization. On our wildlife cruise home we will look for whales, visit a sea-lion haul out and bird rookeries, and enjoy the incredible beauty of the coast where mountains and oceans meet. Return to Seward Small Boat Harbor approximately 6 to 7 PM. Weather and whale conditions can affect arrival time, please plan accordingly.
