The prehistoric Celtic settlement of Loch Garman linked with the 9th century Viking settlement to form what is now Wexford. The present day narrow main street formed the market trail between the two communities. In the 12th and 13th centuries the Normans stretched the town walls along the banks of the river Slaney and encompassed the, by then, unified township. One of the gates built at the time was the Westgate which, sensitively restored, is now a splendid heritage centre telling the town's dramatic story. A visit to the National Heritage Park is a must when visiting Wexford. (Wexford - meaning Lough of Garman).
