Creating an Airport Extreme wireless network

Step 1 - Airport settings

The Airport Base Station is the "brain" of your wireless network and as such must be configured correctly in order to provide you with optimal performance and ease of use.

Instructions:

From the desktop click on the "Finder" Menu at the top of the screen and move the mouse down through "Services" and "Finder" and click "Open".
Select "Applications" from the left menu of the Finder window and click on the arrow next to the "Utilities" folder.
Double click on "Airport Admin Utility" and then on the Airport base station you wish to configure. Enter the administration password (the default should be "public") and click on "Show All Settings".

On the "Airport" tab, give your base station a name.

Now give your Airport Network a name. For simplicity just give it the same name as your base station at this stage.

If this is the first time you have configured your base station, it will pay to change the password - otherwise other people will be able to change your base stations settings.

With the "Create Closed Network" option enabled, users need to know the name of your network before they can join it. This is recommended for your private network. If you are running an Open network - then this would be a bad option.

WEP security, while weak, can be useful in preventing the casual hacker from getting into your network and see what you are sending.

The security level can be changed by clicking "Change Wireless Security".
