Location Descriptions

Ever imagine a place of turquoise blue waters, tidewater and hanging glaciers, islands with protected coves and rugged cliffs, whales, puffins, and glorious skies? Visit Kenai Fjords National Park and Resurrection Bay and these visions come true. A vast array of natural environments and ecosystems await you, from icefields where calving glaciers turn the waters into a slush cup of iceberg bits, to quiet protected coves where pristine waterfalls cascade into crystal clear waters. The waters teem with marine life; sea otters that casually watch you as they feed on sea urchins and crab..... the adolescent seal that follows curiously as you kayak in silence... pods of orcas that glide through the waters in search of salmon... it's all here waiting for you.

Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park are truly a kayakers paradise - the land where the mountains meet the sea. Remote and accessible only by boat, its varied expanse awaits your exploration. The silent ripple of the kayak as it glides along the waters surface makes each natural encounter memorable. This is our home and we are excited to be able to provide you with three great ways to explore this area.

The fun starts in Seward
Seward, Alaska, lies at the head of Resurrection Bay, the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park, and is a spectacular 3 hour drive south of Anchorage. Seward can be reached by air, bus, train and rental car. Seward is a quaint little town surrounded by mountains and glaciers. Sunny Cove's reservations and information office is located in the log cabin Adventure Center at the Seward Small Boat Harbor.

While visiting this small coastal community be sure to plan at least a day to tour the Alaska SeaLife Center, visit Kenai Fjords National Park Visitors Center, enjoy a hike at nearby Exit Glacier (the only part of Kenai Fjords National Park that is accessible by road), go fishing for salmon or halibut, or any one of the many other worthwhile activities that Seward has to offer. Seward... gateway to your Alaska adventure vacation.

Lowell Point, Seward
Lowell Point on Resurrection Bay is located 2 miles from Seward Center. From its pebbled beaches and glacier vistas we paddle along the shoreline where encounters with sea lions, otters, numerous sea birds, humpbacks and many leaping salmon are common. Seward kayaking options from Lowell Point include 3-hour and full day kayaks tours to Tonsina Creek and Caines Head State Recreation Area. Sunny Cove's Lowell Point operation is located at the Alaska Saltwater Lodge.

Fox Island Wilderness Retreat
Located at the entrance to Resurrection Bay, 14 ocean miles from Seward, Fox Island is a magical mix of temperate rain forest, sculpted cliffs and protected coves. The waters teem with sea lions, otters & whales while bald eagles, peregrine falcons, puffins and more soar the skies above. Fox Island is the perfect place to learn or refine your paddling skills within a unique island ecosystem. All Fox Island excursions are done in conjunction with Kenai Fjords Tours and begin at the Kenai Fjords Tours dock in the Seward Small Boat Harbor. Sunny Cove offers a full day paddle at Fox Island and two Fox Island Kayak and Wildlife Cruise combination tours.

Kenai Fjords National Park
Experience the land where mountain and oceans meet, an adventurers paradise. Paddle in the midst of bergy bits while tidewater glaciers calve. Calving glaciers, icebergs, abundant marine life, steep granite walls, quiet lagoons and beautiful valleys await your explorations. Sunny Cove offers the Grand Day Tour into Aialik Bay and kayak/camping tours into Aialik Bay and Northwestern Fjord. These fjords are accessible with a three to four hour boat ride. Exit Glacier is the only area of the National Park that is accessible by car. Wild and remote this area deserves the accolades it has received. Budget as much time as you can to explore this place. Sunny Cove National Park trips depart from the Adventure Center.
