Stavanger, located on the southwestern coast of Norway, is the country's fourth largest city. It is a charming, cosmopolitan centre surrounded by breathtaking scenery.

The most noteworthy sight is a Romanesque cathedral dating back to 1125. The Norwegian Petroleum Museum traces the formation of oil and gas from millions of years ago and is a fascinating and entertaining outing. Stavanger Museum and Stavanger Canning Museum are also well worth visiting. In addition to its historical attractions, Stavanger has endless sandy beaches on the shores of the North Sea and is surrounded by breathtaking mountains, waterfalls and plains.

The cobbled streets and small wooden houses of Old Stavanger date back to the end of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th century. Strolling through this section of the city is a lovely way to absorb its enchanting, old-world atmosphere.

Stavanger and its environs afford wonderful opportunities for swimming, fishing, cycling, or simply soaking up the spectacular views. The town centre is the place for entertainment, with a wide selection of shops, restaurants, movies and nightclubs to choose from. Stavanger is known as the food capital of Norway, and has exceptionally high quality restaurants.

By boat you can reach the lovely islands of Kvitsøy, where the fjord meets the open sea. In the gorgeous Lyseford you can view the strange and magnificent formation called Pulpit Rock. The Ulandhaug area, seven kilometres west of the city, is home to the Ulandhaug Botanical Gardens and a communications tower with panoramic views.

Sola Airport is located 15 minutes away from Stavanger centre and is a connection to both national and international cities. The Fjordlines ferry route to Newcastle is the only international sea link. The Norwegian State railway system extends along the southern coast all the way to Oslo. Buses are available to other Norwegian cities.
