Experience
a Pilgrimage to Mecca with Darwan Tour
A
short account of Mecca and Haj history:
Every Muslim in his/her lifetime is obligated to pay a pilgrimage to
Mecca. Mecca which is located in western Saudi Arabia is Islam's holiest
city. It is the birthplace of prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H), and the city he
returned to after his exile in Medina. Over 1.2 billion Muslims around
the world face five times a day towards this direction to pray to Allah,
or God. At the center of Masjed Al-Haram which is located in Mecca is
Ka'aba, or house of Allah. Muslims don't worship Ka'aba. They worship
what it represents, an unseen God, named Allah.
Ka'aba is a cubical stone structure which is 50-foot high. According to a
Muslim tradition, the famous Black Stone of the Ka'aba fell from Heaven
during the time of Adam and Eve. On God's command, the prophet Abraham
(P.B.U.H) and his son Ismail built the Ka'aba around it. The Black Stone
(Hajarol Aswad), which still can be seen today, is said to be the only
feature of the original Ka'aba that still remains.
In Islam going to
Mecca and performing the pilgrimage is called "Haj". After a
successful pilgrimage is done, a male pilgrim is called "Haj",
and a female pilgrim is called "Hajiyeh". Every Muslim in Haj
is required to perform number of rituals which prophet Abraham and his
family
had then performed
in Mecca. According to a Muslim tradition, at one point of time,
God commanded Abraham to take his wife Hajar, and his infant son Ismail
to a desolate desert valley in Mecca, and leave them there, trusting that
God would take care of them.
When Hajar was ran out of water and food, she desperately searched for
water for her son in the most harsh desert conditions. She frequently
between the hills of "Safa" and "Marwah" before
eventually collapsing in despair and prayed God to help her. Miraculously,
a spring of water soon gushed forth at Ismail's feet. That spring which
is lasted up to this date, is called Zam Zam. Pilgrims to this day,
replicate the desperate search of Hajar for the water for his son, by
going back and forth seven times between places of Safa and Marwah. This
act is called Sa'y.
When Abraham returned, he was astounded to see Hajar running a well,
trading water with passer-by. As the traders and nomads decided to settle
in the valley, the small settlement grew later into the city of Mecca.
On another of his visits, God ordained Abraham to build a place of
worship for him and to call all believers on an annual pilgrimage there.
Together with Ismail, they both built Ka'aba on a sanctified place first
established by Adam. This building still stands today and pilgrims
circumnavigate it when performing what is known as "Tawaf".
During their lifetimes, Abraham and Ismail maintained the Haj rituals,
but within centuries, the worship at the Ka'aba change to paganism and the
worship of idols. Eventually God sent down another prophet from the line
Abraham to restore Ka'aba and the Haj rituals to their correct paths.
In year 632 on his return to Mecca from exile in Medina, prophet Mohammad
(P.B.U.H) embarked on a journey with thousands of his followers. While
taking Mecca with little resistance, he destroyed the idols, reclaimed
the Ka'aba and restored the Haj rites to their original purity and
devotion to one God alone.
Prophet Mohammad has
delivered his sermon on Mountain "Arafat", which among other
things, he directed people to believe in one God, equality of all Muslim
believers, the sanctity of life, property and honor, and women's rights.
Every year and during the Haj season, millions of Muslims gather in
Arafat to hear sermons, to remember the oneness of God, and spiritual
values. According to a Muslim tradition Arafat will be a place where
people would stand in front of God on the day of judgment.
