2008 Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby is officially here!

Derby Headquarters on the Spit has opened. Hours are 5:30 am - 8:30 am and 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm daily. So don't forget to buy your Derby tickets!

A barn door halibut has been caught and we have a new Derby leader  - Jeff Pardi of San Rafael who caught a 348.2 lb halibut on July 9th. Jeff was fish with Capt. Keith Kalke on the Ocean Hunter with Ocean Hunter Chargers. Congratulations Jeff!

And we had a $10,000 tagged fish caught, but the angler - Steve Merson of
Fort Atkinson, WI - did not have a derby ticket! Poor Steve - what a wonderful 40th birthday present that would have been for him.

Check out the current standings!

First five tagged fish of the season have been caught - congratulations to Kristen Eggleton of Anchorage, AK who caught the first $500 fish. Kristen was fishing with Captain Ron Sekula on the Kimie-Kim, a private boat. The tagged fish was sponsored by Inua - Spirit of Alaska. Second tagged fish worth $500 was caught by William Wayne Prather of Milan, IL. Wayne was fishing with Captain Bruce Elkins on the Sea Flight with Sea Flight Charters. The tagged fish was sponsored by Wells Fargo Insurance Services. The third tagged fish of May was worth $1,000 and was caught by Tom Parkman of Asotin, WA. Tom was fishing on the Kestrel, a private boat. The tagged fish was sponsored by Duggan's Waterfront Pub.

The fourth tagged fish, and first one for June was worth $1,000 and was caught by Veronica Younack of Wasilla, AK. Veronica was fishing with Capt. Steve Button on the Donna Mae with Crystal Sea Charters. The tagged fish was sponsored by Alyeska Tire. Pictured above is Veronica who looks as though she would prefer not touching the tagged halibut, even if it was worth $1,000. The second tagged fish caught in June was worth $500 and was caught by Renee Bond of Homer, AK. Renee was fishing with Capt. Guy Carlson on the Dutch Treat with Inlet Charters. The tagged fish was sponsored by the Homer Halibut Jackpot Derby Committee.

There was only one entry in May for the Released Fish prize. Congratulations to Larry Shaw of Reno, NV who was fishing with Captain Ben Martin on the Fringe Benefit with North Country Charters.

There were eight entries in June for the Released Fish prize. Congratulations to Jeff Kroschel of Woodbury, MN who was fishing with Arctic Sun Charters.

The Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby is an annual event, running from May 1 to September 30 each year. Tickets are $10.
