Welcome! Here is a question to kickstart some conversation. How do you collect email addresses?

As a reseller, I provide an acrylic drop box and sign-up slips for all of my clients. I buy the boxes in bulk through Displays2Go; I pay a little extra for the side attachments to hold the sign-up slips.
I have a template for the "Join Our Email Club" signage part that I customize for each client. The sign-up slips are simple... name and email address. 4 or 6-up on a page and a trip to Staples and you're all set.
Make it look professional, and you'll maximize sign-ups.

I'm into the entertainment industry, so when I have events, along with having a passive sheet at the door, I have people mingling in the crowd asking people if they like what they are seeing and if they would like to be informed of other events like that one, as well as be entered to win some cool prizes!

We have a sign up box on our website which works very well. We also forward each new customer the most recent newsletter with a thank you message for their order. Most of our customers enjoy the newsletters and look forward to them each month. If we do a trade show (about once a year) we have a join our mailing list box and include the newsletter information on our sheet.

I have a passive sign up sheet at my check out desk, a sign up on my website and a spot for e-mail addresses on the fee ticket that gets filled out when they paint a piece of pottery in my Paint Your Own Pottery Studio.

Hi everyone,
We use a signup box on our website - every main page, as well as a manual signup sheet at our sales counter. We are a retail store by the way.
cheers, graham

I have a signup box on the website, but most people use the form I created and sign up in the store at the register. The form has checkboxes to reflect each of the interest categories I have in CC. I add them myself using the signup button on the website. Very soon, I will implement a customer loyalty program, and collect emails when customers sign up for that. I ran a survey recently to get customer's input on the loyalty program, and most respondents were interested in receiving a monthly eNewsletter targeted to their recent purchases.

My newsletter has a limited audience and is just sent to home owners in my neighborhood to keep them informed of community events. So far only 1/2 of the neighborhood has joined so we added a line on our annual dues form that reads "to be informed of upcoming events please include your email address with your slip".
The second year we did it we also added "please print clearly" Which seemed to help a lot

SKU #: RBHSLHWM44 Small Ballot Box w/ Pocket - these are like $40 each.
SKU #: MSBLK Mini Registration Box Black - these are like $22 each - although not on the website, I seem to remember being able to get these with the side pockets - you might want to call and ask.
I have also bought the cheapo cardboard drop boxes for events and these are only about $1 in quantity.

1. Go to your Constant Contact signup box.
2. Click the Go button without entering an email address and the Visitor Registration page pops up. Copy the URL that displays in the address bar of the browser. Although these URLs are account-specific, your URL will look something like this: http://visitor.constantcontact.com/optin.jsp?m=XXXXXXXXXXXXX&ea=&id=preview.XXXXXXXXXXXXX Remove everything after &ea=&id.....
Just add to your email signature.
I have added a lot of customers to my lists this way. It works real well.

We held a contest at work for a full day off to whoever brought in the most email addresses of people in our network. We are a non-profit agency and this jumpstarted us with 800 addresses or so.

We add customers who have purchased from us to our email list. It's listed in our Privacy Policy that they will receive one email from us after they purchase and if they don't want it again, we will permanently remove them from our list. 90% of our list was built this way. We also have a sign-up form on every page of our website (we do business on-line exclusively).
Peace, Brian

Here's how plus a plug/review for Constant Contact training. I also went to a Constant Contact seminar in AZ (Tucson). It really was excellent and got me and my 2 friends to sign up as customers. Constant Contact has a guy named Ron Cates doing this for them, and I got a ton of really useful information in that 2 hours. I don't know if he only does west coast or the whole country - ask CC, but go see him if you can. I emailed him after the presentation about the email link and he emailed me right back with a description:
Because we send and reply to so many emails each day, your email signature is a great place for an invitation to join your subscriber list.
A signature is the text that is automatically added to the bottom of an e-mail, and usually includes your contact information.
Example: Joe Smith Director of Things Anyworld Manufacturing www.anyword.com Office: (111) 222-3333
Imagine the number of new subscribers you’d get if everyone you emailed had an opportunity to sign up!
Joe Smith Director of Things Anyworld Manufacturing www.anyword.com Office: (111) 222-3333 Click here to receive our FREE email newsletter!
Here’s how to do it: 1. Go to your website and locate the Constant Contact signup box. Note: If you do not have a website or a signup box on the site, you can still create this signup link. Simply use the Newsletter > Urban template to send yourself an email campaign and use the signup box that is there.
2. Click the Go button without entering an email address and the Visitor Registration page pops up.
3. Copy the URL that displays in the address bar of the browser. Although these URLs are account-specific, your URL will look something like this:
http://visitor.constantcontact.com/optin.jsp?m=XXXXXXXXXXXXX&ea=&id=preview.XXXXXXXXXXXXX
4. Remove the red portion and this is the URL to your signup form.
Adding the URL for your signup form to your email signature in Microsoft Outlook: Note: This option is not available in Outlook Express.
1. In the main Outlook window, select Tools -> Options
2. The Options window opens. Select the Mail Format tab.
3. In the Signatures section, click on the Signatures… button. The Create Signature window opens. Click on New… Note: For this example, we’ll create a new signature. To update an existing signature, click on Edit…
4. The Create New Signature window opens. Type a name for your signature and choose the Start with a blank signature button, then click on Next >
5. The Edit Signature window opens. Type in your signature text, including your invitation to subscribe. Example: Sign up for our FREE e-newsletter
6. Highlight your invitation line, right-click and choose Edit Hyperlink…
7. The Hyperlink window opens. Type in the URL for your signup form. Click OK.
To create a site visitor signup box:
1. Go to the More Features tab.
2. Click the "Start Wizard to generate HTML code" link under Step 1.
3. Select a form, button, or text link style. To view all your style options at once, click the "Preview All Styles" link.
4. Customize the text, font, and colors to match your website. If applicable, you can select from image options as well. Please note that the options available to you depend on which signup box style you select in the previous step.
5. Email the HTML code to yourself and save for future reference. You are now ready add the site signup box to your website. Simply copy and paste the code into your page source and upload it to the web.

We get a number of subscribers from those who sign-up on our web site, the second most come from those who have been sent our newsletter from someone else -- but, by far and away, the most frequent way is passing around a pad of paper and collecting names and email addresses whenever possible.
Since my "audience" is younger, they tend to change addresses frequently, so having the names is very important (and they especially like the personalization it adds to the newsletter).

I am surprised not to see anyone using the Squeeze Page method! http://www.designerwiz.com/software-sales/Squeeze-Page/index.html
Or, if your reselling products you should look into Viral List Building techniques. http://designerwiz.com/soft-goldsite/viralmasterlistbuilder/
These 2 methods work remarkably well if you use them wisely.
