Pacific LightNet President Pat Bustamante on PBS Hawaii

Pat Bustamante was the featured guest on the October 10 edition of Everybody’s Business with Howard Dicus on PBS Hawaii. This locally produced, Hawaii-focused, business program, is shown weekly on PBS Hawaii each Friday evening.

Bustamante’s eight and one-half minute interview focuses upon Pacific LightNet’s recent change in ownership and what this change means to the company’s plans for the future. Also discussed are Pacific LightNet’s Hawaii Island Fiber Network, bandwidth availibility, new products, and the benefits of working for Pacific LightNet.

Introducing Mike Allen, Pacific LightNet Technical Instructor

Hello, I’m Mike Allen, Technical Instructor here at Pacific LightNet. Over the years (yes, I’ve been in the industry for longer than most) I’ve had the opportunity to work and live with telecommunications technology as it has evolved from analog to digital, from copper to fiber, and from walkie talkie to wireless. And, yes, I actually did have two cans and a string at one point as well. It’s been a remarkable journey; one that I hardly could have imagined on my first day on the job way back as a teenager.

As one who has instructed people throughout the world about telecommunications, I find that, no matter how “gee whiz” the technology, understanding what makes it all work requires a firm grounding in the basics. Now, you can all pull out your Netwon’s Telecom Dictionary (which I still do quite frequently) to find out what different terms mean, but how do these terms fit into the larger picture?

That’s where I’ll come in.

I’ll be blogging about telecommunication’s building blocks. Through my posts I will deliver a broader understanding of telecommunications as a technology that touches us all in our daily (and nightly) lives.

Pacific LightNet at 2008 Annual Bar Convention

Pacific LightNet will be one of serveral vendors participating at the Hawaii State Bar Association’s upcoming 2008 Annual Bar Convention. This full-day event is packed with educational programs as well as networking opportunities with colleagues, sponsors, and vendors. Ever Wonder what your Telephone Number Spells?

A colleague introduced me to a website (www.phonespell.com) which shows you what words and phrases your phone number spells. Excitedly, I went to the website and entered Pacific LightNet’s main telephone number: 791-1000. I received this disappointing result:

 

There are no words in 791-1000. Believe it or not, we did not find any interesting mnemonics for 791-1000. Everything is working fine, this is not a bug. Some numbers just have such odd combinations of letters and/or too many zeroes and ones that do simply do not have good mnemonics. Sorry. Perhaps you might like to try again with the number 568-3569 for an example of how the system works.

 

Out of curiosity, I tried 568-3569 and got some hits: Lou-flow, jot-flow, lot-flow, love-joy, Lou-Flo-9, and 5-mud-low.

 

Much better. I thought, “Who, if anyone, has the good fortune of having such a memorable number?” It turns out that this is an unused Lanai number.

 

Does the time-of-day number (643-8463) spell anything? Where I grew up, you got the time-of-day number by dialing “pop-corn.” Simple and easy to remember. The website generated a long list of words. After looking over the list, I decided “mid-time” might be a good memory jogger for this number.

 

I tried other numbers and got some juicy words, none of which I can print without getting marched into the HR office … or worse. Anyway, check out the website. You might find it useful.

Podcast #2 - Intercom Codes Explained

“Intercom Codes” are used by Pacific LightNet’s Hosted PBX system for what is typically thought of as an extension.  These codes let you call your cubemate in your Business Group by dialing a few digits of his phone number.

Intercom Codes are different from Direct Inward Dial or DID telephone numbers:                            

  • Intercom Codes are used within the phone system;
  • DID numbers are used to call a particular telephone from outside of the phone system.

 This podcast discusses Intercom Codes and provides guidelines for their use.

Pacific LightNet Completes Sale to Investor Group

Note: Pacific LightNet was recently the subject of press coverage regarding the completion of the company’s sale to a new investor group. The text of the press release describing this sale is given below.

HONOLULU — Pacific LightNet, a Honolulu-based telecommunications company providing a full suite of voice, data, and Internet services to business, commercial and residential customers on all six major islands, announced the completion of a transfer of ownership to a group of Hawaii and mainland investors, including company management.

The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) of the State of Hawaii had previously approved Pacific LightNet’s application to transfer ownership to the private investment group. The transaction will not affect the company’s service offerings to any of its customers. Service rates will also remain unchanged.

“Company management is excited to work with this experienced team of local and mainland investors who genuinely care about the customers we serve,” explained Pat Bustamante, President of Pacific LightNet. “They understand local values and support our commtment to our employees who have made Pacific LightNet one of the most trusted telecommunications companies in Hawaii.”

Pacific LightNet was previously jointly-owned by a Washington-based telecommunications and real estate company, NextNet Investments, and TM Communications Hawaii, LLC. During the transaction, Pacific LightNet was advised by the telecommunications investment banking group at D.A. Davidson & Co., led by Managing Director, Brad Gevurtz.

“There are a number of exciting opportunities now possible for the company to expand the buinsess,” added Tim Sanson, Chief Financial Officer. “In particular, the transfer to an entirely U.S.-based ownership group will allow Pacific LightNet to pursue U.S. government contracts which we were formerly restricted from due to foreign ownership. We can also provide a broader range of service offerings to our customers.”

The company’s first major product launch since the transaction has also become the state’s first fully-managed and operated voice and high-speed Internet service called “Hosted PBX.” This product makes it easier and more cost-effective for small and medium-sized businesses to receive multiple voice and data services over a single broadband connection.

“We will continue to support local businesses and keep jobs in Hawaii,” said Bustamante. “Just recently we chose to keep our 411 directory service here, rather than outsource it overseas, because it allowed us to best serve our local customers.”

Heart Healthy Exercise for the Body … and the Contemporary Mind Too

Last February, Pacific LightNet’s lunchtime walking program was featured in the Honolulu Advertiser article, Walk of Life. The story described an ongoing company effort to create a culture of physical activity and health through walking. It was through such heart-healthy efforts that Pacific LightNet was recognized by the American Heart Association as Hawaii’s first Fit-Friendly company.

With all exercise programs, sometimes a little change is needed to break the monotony of familiar paths. For those of you who are walking regulars, such an opportunity currently presents itself through the Contemporary Museum’s BenchMark activity. From now through October 14, eight artist-designed custom garden seats, part of this 20th anniversary musuem project, are on view in downtown Honolulu. Touring each of the downtown benches makes for an enjoyable and educational 2.2 mile lunchtime excursion.

Downtown Benchmark Walk

  1. Nicholas Bleeker’s temple cedar and stone bench marks the start of the tour. It’s located at First Hawaiian Bank’s downtown branch where you can conviently also stop by The Contemporary Museum at First Hawaiian Center’s newest exhibition: Contemporary Fiber Art of Hawaii (on view through January 13, 2009).
  2. Next head on up Bishop Street towards Chinatown and Pegge Hopper’s 1164 Nuuanu Avenue Gallery to view Roy Venter’s unusual garden bench.
  3. Now cross over to 1132 Bishop Street where Jodi Endicott and Rich Richardson’s bench-works are on display in the second floor lobby. 1132 Bishop Street is where Pacific LightNet is headquartered so I get to see these benches on a daily basis. Let me tell you, these benches are stunning and worth the walk!
  4. Next stop? The Hawaii State Library to meditate on Ron Kent’s Bench for Contemplation. (Drop off that over due book at the same time!)
  5. Proceed across Punchbowl Street to Honolulu Hale where Christopher Reiner’s Separatist bench uses recycled materials to explore social distances between us.
  6. Now on to Beretania Street and the C.S. Wo store. Take a look at Jesse Christensen’s Honduran mahogany pew bench, Palolo Noho, which lives up to its name by inviting its obervers “to live, to stay” while they enjoy its beautiful, simple, design.
  7. The return to First Hawaiian Center completes the 2.2 mile excursion of pure exercise for the mind … and the body.

The Pacific Building Trade Expo is the largest trade exposition serving Hawaii’s building design professionals, owners, and contractors.
