Bing Overtakes Yahoo!
Microsoft’s Bing overtook Yahoo! as the number two search engine in the United States and worldwide on Thursday (4th June) according to our StatCounter Global Stats data. Bing grabbed market share from Google.
“It remains to be seen if Bing falls away after the initial novelty and promotion but at first sight it looks like Microsoft is on to a winner,” commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter. “Steve Ballmer is quoted as saying that he wanted Microsoft to become the second biggest search engine within five years. Following the breakdown in talks to acquire Yahoo! at a cost of $40bn it looks as if he may have just achieved that with Bing much sooner and a lot cheaper than anticipated.”
Our analysis finds that in the US Bing leapfrogged Yahoo to take second place on 16.28%. Yahoo! has 10.22%. Google still commands the US search engine market with 71.47%.
Globally Bing at 5.62% has taken a narrow lead over Yahoo! (5.13%). Google worldwide retains 87.62% of the market.
StatCounter Global Stats, a free online service which captures market share battles of search engines, browsers and operating systems including mobile, was launched in March this year.
The StatCounter Global Stats research data is based on four billion pageloads per month. Other regional and country breakdowns can be viewed at: http://gs.statcounter.com

UPDATE 11 June 2009:
While Bing has fallen back to third place behind Google and Yahoo! it is winning market share for Microsoft against its two main rivals in the US and worldwide according to our latest analysis.
We analyzed search engine market share two weeks before and after the formal launch of Bing on May 28th (14th May to the 27th May and the 28th May to 10th June). For the US market it found:
Google decreased from 78.68% to 77.94% (-0.74%)
Yahoo decreased from 11.46% to 10.76% (-0.7%)
Microsoft (Bing, MSN Search and Live Search) increased from 7.4% to 9% (+1.6%)
(See here and here)
“It is too early to say what the long term result will be but this is a creditable performance by Bing,” commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO StatCounter. “It remains to be seen what happens to Bing after user curiosity and the reported $100m advertising budget runs out.”
Worldwide, comparing the two weeks before and after the Bing launch, StatCounter reports a similar trend with Microsoft taking market share.
Google decreased from 89.81% to 89.69% (-0.12%)
Yahoo decreased from 5.34% to 5.1% (-0.24%)
Microsoft (Bing, MSN Search and Live Search) increased from 3.08% to 3.5% (+0.42%)

The big question now is whether Microsoft will take a big chunk out of Yahoo’s paid search revenue, as mentioned here: http://domusinc.blogspot.com/2009/06/does-microsoft-bing-change-paid-search.html

No way?! I guess with a network the size that Microsoft has, you’ve got the ability to do something like this, but the results with BING have been less than impressive for me. It will be interesting to see how BING does going forward.

sooooo…. Google still kicks everybody’s butt.
Bing hasn’t really changed the world I guess. I see Bing as an improvement over the old Live search engine but it still isn’t Google. Sorry.

Real hot-off-the-press news this - many thanks. Bing seems to return similar results to Google, at least on their first pages. But Bing seem to be shy about giving details for optimising sites for their search engine. Does anyone have any information?

It does not at all surprise me that Bing overtook Yahoo. Looking at hits for my sites, few come from Yahoo… and with Bing’s television ads blitz it is going to get hits from the curious. Even I checked it out and was not at all impressed. When the TV ads disappear, so will Bing and MS will return to trying to reinvent the wheel.
June 6th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
I really dont like Bing. The only reason it leapfrogged yahoo! is simply because people where curious because of the media attention.
But, first impressions, not good.
June 7th, 2009 at 2:00 am
I do like Bing, though have not switched yet - old habits die hard. That was because I did not perceive MS as a search specialist. But now seems like they have taken it very seriously and that is good (not to forget that they have the $$ to do it if needed).
I’ll wait and watch for some more time if it turns out to be good, make the switch (don’t like google corp that much - even though their search is great).

Why is there so much emotion (positive and negative) when a news story focuses on Microsoft? Let’s stick with the facts and how they might or might not impact us. In what ways is Bing better or worse than Google or Yahoo? How will (or should) Bing’s introduction affect marketers? Here are my newest thoughts on Bing, Yahoo!, and Google.
June 8th, 2009 at 5:45 am
It’s not weird since IE 7/8 has ‘Live’ as the default search engine so when anyone search within IE, it’ll redirect to ‘Bingo’ unless he/she is using ‘Google/Yahoo Toolbars.
Anyway, I think folks @ Microsoft will shout out loud: Bingo

Microsoft has redirected all MSN-Live search over to bing, so it’s no longer being split between those latter tow - it’s all showing up as bing.com. Now if Statcounter would just allow me to turn off all the Google country variations! I really don’t care to see Google hits divided up that way.

I guess Microsoft got some tricks up their sleeves to get people to use their search engine.
June 9th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
I find Yahoo clustered on their main page whereas Bing is simple, less distracting. I feel that it is a lot like Google, except that Bing puts a different beautiful background image. That image changes every day. Also, for some keywords, Bing provides more relevant search results. If I can’t find what I am seeking on Google, I will give Bing a try. I use all three search engines, Yahoo, Google and now Bing. I must say that I am stunned to see it pass Google in such a short amount of time. Is it temporary, short term. I guess time will tell on a long term basis.

Amazing, and so quickly, I noticed so many of my visitors coming from bing lately, it was bound to happen sooner or later.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
I’m not at all impressed with Bing. I tested it on some blog posts I’ve written about an extinct post office in rural Nebraska — an obscure topic. I have posted more information about this little community than is available at any other site on the internet.
Google finds these posts as indexed on Blogcatalog within 4 results and finds these posts on my blog as the 14th result. Of course I would like to see it higher, but that’s acceptable. Many of the other top Google results are valid returns for the search terms.
Bing locates my blog feed as the 20th result — please note: it does not find the relevant posts, but it locates my blog feed. That is a fairly useless result for someone who is researching a specific topic.
Most of Bing’s results that ranked higher than my blog feed are “Find a date in …”, “Rent an apartment in …” “Gay Men in …” More useless garbage.
Google remains the top search engine bringing visitors to my blog by a *huge* majority. Next is Yahoo, followed by AOL, and Bing is currently in 4th place.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Re: the “beautiful background image” that Home mentions in a comment above –
That image is no favor to people who have slow internet connections. I don’t care how well it is optimized. A simple page like Google is always going to load a lot faster over dialup.

“According to ComScore, Bing.com market share is up to 11.1% from 9.1% (for Microsoft Live Search).”
Wow, all that money and they gained 2% which I really doubt will last after the buzz is over and the novelty has worn off. Their results are OK, but still need some improvement IMHO. Their commercials are kind of funny, but at least in the case of Google really don’t make sense to me. Google may have more spam, but their results are darn good and better than Yahoo & Bing according to http://blindsearch.fejus.com - although that is subject to gaming, which I now see has happened.
June 10th, 2009 at 3:38 am
Interesting. Quite honestly though, I believe Yahoo Search isn’t really “much” of a contender, as such the Hype surrounding the (Bada) Bing was good enough to outpace them. Google on the other hand is a completely different “ball game”. They’d surely have to work on those results if they are to stand any chance against the big Ol’ G.
Really Good Info. Thanks

I wasnt impressed with the search results i got from Bing for content in fact I couldnt really even tell a difference from live to bing in that regard. The results really did and continue to suck.
However, I was impressed with the image search. In my opinion they OWN that area.
In regard to yahoo. Man those guys are hanging on by a thread. When was the last time we saw anything truly innovative from Yahoo? Innovate or die in this market baby. A lesson their new CEO will learn the hard way i guess.

Competition has just started with But It Not Google(BING) ….
June 10th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
It will all depend on the quality of their search results. I’m still doubtful whether the popularity will last after the initial interest. It was probably mostly thanks to massive advertising like Bing! adverts on television.
June 11th, 2009 at 1:58 am

June 12th, 2009 at 1:26 am
Very helpful of you to post information like this for all of us to use.
June 12th, 2009 at 6:29 am
I suspect it’s because of it being new to the internet. Although most critics believes that the off-line media promotion did the work mostly.
June 12th, 2009 at 7:15 am
It looks like many people are testing this new search engine. If they like it, they might stick to it. Nothing lasts forever on Internet and it will be interesting to see if Bing keeps its share after its first weeks.
June 12th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
I wouldn’t say they’ve done this legitimately. Aside from all the curious people whoa re just checking it out due to the media hype, the vast majority of its users are only there because they were FORCED to use it. Windows Update switched their default engine when they updated to IE8. On top of that, anyone who used Live search is now on Bing as Live is no more.
Most people don’ even have a clue how to change their default engine. I’ve written a couple of articles on Bing and get dozens of people a day commenting on it asking me how to remove it because they dont know how. They are also quite outraged about being forced to switch.
Dont get me wrong, it’s a slick search engine and has a better video search than Google but that’s about all I’d use it for. It has some quirks that I just cant get past. Plus I use Google for everything else so I’m already there when I need to search for something. And besides, competition is a good thing
June 12th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
I hadn’t even heard about Bing until I read this post. Looks quite colourful compared with Google!
June 12th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
Yahoo’s biggest mistake is trying to beat Google. They should have stuck with its directory, it is what made them unique. They were the first directory on the Internet in 1994. Now, Bing is trying to beat Google and Yahoo in search. If only management had more focus, unfortunately, they are blind.

Bing cannot compete with Google. Bing sells itself as a smarter search engine than yahoo and Google, and asserts they are annoying. But what is so different about Bing? I decided to test Bing against Google this morning, and this is what I found:
I searched for info on a rare brain disorder (Hepato Cerebral Degeneration of the brain/non-Wilson type). I typed “hepatodegenerationofthebrain”into both Google and Bing; Bing “found no results”, while Google was intuitive, separated the words, and offered me 2 choices that were related to my search. Then, I typed in ‘hepato cerebral degeneration of the brain’; Bing came up with sites about Wilson’s disease, which is not the disorder I am researching…while Google not only corrected my spelling (hepatocerebral degeneration), all 10 results on the first page were about the disorder. Only 4 of the 10 results Bing offered me were actually on the subject I was searching. And the first 3 listed were not.
So, tell me again why I should use Bing?

How can I tell if Bing is “seeing” all of my site? I don’t see where to let them know I am here. I am getting some hits from them, but not on my top pages.
June 27th, 2009 at 2:20 am
I see that Bing has beaten both google and yahoo by a wide margin on my website according to statcounter and msn and live have disappeared. The quality of traffic remains the same, just don’t seem to be as many hits from google or yahoo.

I think Bing will take some getting used to. Once you’re addicted to Google it’s hard to surf elsewhere. Google still seems to be the market leader in peoples eyes but it appears the data no longer supports this idea.

I think Bing is doing great..lets see if he can beat Google..i don’t think so but he have the chances..

It looks like many people are testing this new search engine. If they like it, they might stick to it. Nothing lasts forever on Internet and it will be interesting to see if Bing keeps its share after its first weeks.

I was not surprised to see it fall back down but I am surprised people are expecting this to stay. Do you not know how much money microsoft is pouring into BING advertising right now? An unsustainable amount. Once they cut back the advertising, the share will fall once again. For the money they are putting into this, they should have retaken 2nd place weeks ago.

It remains to be seen whether the inertia of internet surfers’ habit (which is to use Google mostly) will be stronger than the force of innovation
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:27 am
The whole world of search engines and keyword research is fascinating to me, and I spend hours in it (I must like research obviously with a PhD degree), but for some reason I feel as though I will continue to use Google mostly, and I think most people will do the same. Will the hard facts of stats prove me wrong?
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:18 am
Hmm - I seem to come up pretty well on it for some keywords, but far less so for others.
I wonder if they’ve got a site map submissions page…
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:36 pm
I’ve been following Bing pretty closely. STATCOUNTER has pulled together some good information on how Bing’s been doing so far - it’s been interesting to watch. I do wonder if it’s just a fad, or if they will be able to continually move in on Google’s market share.
I don’t know that any search engine will ever overtake Google, but Microsoft did do a good maneuver with Bing as they didn’t buy Yahoo. So far we’ve noticed that Bing is drawing in better sales than we were getting on the MSN networks - for pay per click sales.
I also wonder what types of algorithms Bing uses for organic listings. They do appear to use something quite different than Google does. One thing is for sure - there will always be dynamic changes in the world of search engines.

great news.. thanks
July 4th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Do you think its down to the marketing and hype or just the quality of results it attains. Not too impressed myself much prefer Yahoo, still its early days.
July 5th, 2009 at 4:08 am
Yes, I see now that I am getting more and more visitors from Bing, in fact the numbers that I get from Bing are almost the same that I get from Yahoo.
Of course Google is far ahead of BOTH of them by a LOOOONG way.

I am not impressed with Bling .. ooops sorry …. meant to say Bing ! …. the Search Results are poor compared to Google. I never used Yahoo anyway so can’t compare against that.
July 13th, 2009 at 3:13 am
Give it time they’re trying to give us a new kind of search engine
July 13th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
I don’t think Bing will be popular in Europe. Some of the stuff it’s capable of is only for US.
July 14th, 2009 at 2:25 am
wow, i never thought it would be so fast. Yahoo actually has been showing a lot of spammy sites for search results. I am tired of using Yahoo. Google will still be my leading search engine, but i definitely will give Bing a try.
July 14th, 2009 at 6:30 pm
Hmm, it’s going to take a lot for me to not use Google as my main search engine. It’s the best out there for finding relevant information. I doubt Bing will ever out compete them. I guess we’ll see.
Thanks for the info though!

I was using Live services since quiet some time. I like meaning search and some other small stuff from Live. But the first time, I see bettter results from Bing for my query “hotkeys undo redo” over Google. Looks like there is a trend going here if it is true, google has to improve their algorithems to keep-up. Now I can recommend someone to go try out bing!

Yes, I am seeing a lot of my visitors now coming from Bing (more than what were coming from the old MSN Live engine) but it may be more because now Bing seems to be well integrated as a “default” in many Microsoft apps.
As of now I guess Google is still No 1, with Yahoo at No 2 and Bing at No 3.
As for Ask, I hardly see any visitors from it nowadays.

I have noticed bing in my stats more and more. They are doing some great advertising also. Wonder how they will do against Google in the long run.
July 26th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
Google finds content way before other engines. Its rediculous how long it takes the others to index a new website.
July 27th, 2009 at 7:41 am
It’s good to see that Google has (or will at some point) have at least some kind of run for their money as Yahoo has been dropping in significance for years now
July 27th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
Very useful information.
Bing is doing a lot better than the old search engine, but still Google is doing great. I hope slowly some search engines get a bigger share.
July 27th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
I’m not too surprised…BING is pumping money into their engine but most folks I talk to just aren’t seeing enough of a difference to switch from their beloved Google or Yahoo queries.

This is essentially Microsoft’s long-awaited takeover of Yahoo’s web search portal, but packaged in a way that will be more palatable to Yahoo — minimising the hurt caused to Yahoo’s tender pride. It’s a take-over by another name.
