Attack of Nasty Ads!
Folks,
As different adverts are shown on StatCounter in different parts of the world, here in StatCounter HQ, we don’t actually get to see every single advert shown to our members… and although we try hard to screen all ads BEFORE they are are shown on StatCounter, some nasty ads do slip through the net
In the last 24 hours we have heard reports that some nasty auto-expanding ads have been shown on StatCounter. We do apologise for this. We are investigating this with a view to removing all offending adverts ASAP and thanks are due to StatCounter members Gordon and Tony for their quick action in alerting us to this issue.
While we rely on our advertising revenue to fund our free service, we only want the nicest, best behaved ads on our site. Thanks for your patience as we work to fix this issue.
UPDATE:
We believe we have traced and removed the source of the offending ads. Please post here if you continue to see any nasty ads and give us the following information:
• Ad position - top or side
• url where ad is being seen
• screenshot of ad
• geo location where ad was seen
• Click url of ad
Please also take a screenshot of the ad and we will contact you directly to retrieve the image from you. Many thanks!

This is a little off topic but related to the interactions between web programs.
I wanted to alert Wordpress/Statcounter users the Amazon Showcase widget has crashed and it can take down your Statcounter functions.
Deactivate the Amazon widget and everything returns to normal. Amazon changed their interface and the widget won’t be updated.
I lost two days of stats before isolating the problem.

That’s OK, we still love u guys….
August 25th, 2009 at 1:47 am
Pages load slowly with long waits for “optimized-by.rubiconproject.com”. Each page load has up to a 45 second wait. Navigating around the site takes forever.
StatCounter Team Response:
Hi June,
Please report any site performance issues to our Support Desk immediately as they happen using this form.
This will allow us to investigate and resolve any issues asap.
Thanks!
August 25th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
As always, this is a nice point from you. You don’t put ads in our websites, like other “free” counters do (pop ups, pop unders…), and still you really even care for ads that you rule just in your own site. It was not so long when some kind of “nasty” (e. g. not-so-safe-for-work aka porn or adult-oriented) ads appeared in Adsense and you asked for community for tracking those adverts and help you identify and “ban” them from your site.
Thank you very much, statcounter guys. You have a bussiness, but you rule it so clean and so friendly that I just can hope some “others” would learn from you.
Cheers!
StatCounter Team Response:
Thanks Persefone!
We do try to provide the best service we can… great to know you’re pleased with how we’re doing!
August 25th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
Noted, thanks.
August 25th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
Thanks you guys, as stated before. We love you guys thanks for an awesome service
August 25th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
That’s OK. Thanks.
August 25th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
Service is much faster today. Thanks for the quick response. Thanks for your website, too.
StatCounter Team Response:
Good to hear that June. Thanks!
August 26th, 2009 at 1:31 am
WOW, I have never seen *any* ads on StatCounter.com, never mind nasty ones! Thanks for letting us know however, and sorry you had to deal with this. You guys provide an excellent service!
August 26th, 2009 at 3:43 am
Couple of my websites was blocked by google search a week ago because of a trojan on the index and I remove all the advertising but the trojan pop ups continue, so once I remove the counter everything stop, counters with pop ups is a big NO NO, I understand that you guys need a revenue to continue the free service but the nasty pop ups with virus wont work. I add the counters again and it seems to be allright so far.
Greetings from Kansas!
StatCounter Team Reponse:
Hi Steve,
Sorry to hear about your troubles, but your Trojan problem had nothing to do with StatCounter.
We don’t serve ads on our members sites period. The only advertising we use is on StatCounter itself. In fact, we even allow you to choose an invisible counter option with no need to credit StatCounter at all - even for free accounts. We certainly don’t allow any pop ads on StatCounter and we DEFINITELY don’t serve ads with viruses!
August 26th, 2009 at 10:12 am
I must be extremley lucky as up to now (fingers crossed) I have not encountered a Trojan. I run Vista Ultimate with Avant Browser and Avast anti-virus. Those with Windows Defender seem to protect me well. I have never had any problem with Statcounter other than sometimes it is a bit slow loading. Thank you for this brilliant free Service.

Good day,
Statcounter is my favorite website analytics and stats service. You guys are doing a wonderful job to ensure quality service.
Although I haven’t seen any issues with the ads displayed at Statcounter, however, as far as I understand, it is Google Adsense ads that show up on top and sidebar of Statcounter website. It is strange that Google didn’t filter bad adverts? May be some may have slipped through.
If anyone is complaining about any issues with advertisements, it is unfair. Statcounter delivers Google Adsense ads. It is Google’s duty to filter nasty ads and deliver only quality advertisements.
The bottom line, I love statcounter because it is the best website analytics service. I have been using Statcounter since years. I wrote a review of best web analytics services at my website and Statcounter is included in the list.
Rock on guys!
Regards,
Andy.
StatCounter Team Response:
Andy - thanks!
Appreciate your kind comments and understanding.
All the best!
August 26th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
Your site has allowed me to know which of my niche marketing efforts are working without $1000 worth of worthless advice.
August 26th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
I just wanted to take this opportunity to tell you guys how much I appreciate your site! Even the FREE version overdelivers! I haven’t seen any nasty ads in my neck of the woods, and I must admit to being somewhat of a stat junkie. I love your site, and now that I think about it I think I need to do a post on your site and send some traffic your way!!
Thanks again,
Jerry
August 27th, 2009 at 3:03 am
You guys are doing a very good job. Ads are OK. I have not seen any nasty ones. I do not understand. you have adsense ads displayed. And in my understanding google does not allow adult advertising.
All in all thank you for your service and I do not have any problems with your ads.
Just keep it up
Matt
StatCounter Team Response:
Hi Matt,
We have actually had trouble with unsavoury ads from Google from time to time… plus we do run other ad networks also.
Thanks for your comment!
August 27th, 2009 at 4:51 am
Thanks for always looking out for users like us.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:01 am
I would like to commend your team for upholding family values! Thank You!!!!
August 28th, 2009 at 11:20 am
I’ve seen those ads and they pale in comparison to others even on family oriented websites. There has got to be a way to filter out those ads. I too had the same issue awhile back and sent a complaint to those responsible. Never got a reply. I now only have text adverts on my site.
Paul
August 28th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Unfortunatly ads on the web are becoming increasing common, simply as they are the easiest way to make money. As with spam i think there if definately a market to create filters.
Anyway, good work you guys!
August 28th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Lol, have never seen NASTY ADS on statscounter pages, but Thanks for advise.
August 28th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Will do. BTW thanks for your great service!
Larry
August 28th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
All I can see is google adsense and I don’t think they have those nasty ads. Is it possible for you to share the ads or the network? It might be useful to some of us.
Anyways, kudos to SC for your awesome service!
August 28th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
While we’re at it, can we get rid of the expandable flash ads and the audio ads? Thanks much!
StatCounter Team Response:
Hi there,
We don’t actually allow ANY ads which AUTOMATICALLY expand or make noise on the site… we find these kind of ads annoying too so we don’t permit them on StatCounter. We do allow some user controlled ads, but by definition these ads are in your control and shouldn’t exaond of make noise without your input. If one of these auto-expanding/noisey ads slips through our filters, please let us know ASAP.
Please follow the instructions in the blog and report the ad directly to us using this form.
Thanks so much!
August 29th, 2009 at 1:58 am
I only ever see Google AdSense ads on StatCounter site, and they’re always very clean and nice. I guess that’s due to country targeting.
August 29th, 2009 at 5:25 am
I didn’t see any nasty ads
No idea about it, seeing only google ads. Cool effort as usual from statcounter.
August 29th, 2009 at 9:50 am
Thank you for keeping us updated on those nasty Ads……………
August 29th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
Well, I didn’t find any dirty ads.
August 29th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
I appreciate your efforts to keep the site decent.
August 29th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
Thanks, I didn’t see one but am thankful for your quick response as my children use this site. Once again you have outdone yourselves statcounter team!

August 30th, 2009 at 12:58 am
Hey well I admire the fact that you guys are doing the right thing and posting it instead of trying to cover it up as much as possible like a lot of folks may have done. That shows integrity which is important for sure.
August 30th, 2009 at 5:39 am
I’ve been using statcounter for more than 3 years and been looking into it fore even more, but i’ve never had this kind of incident.
Will definitely let you know if anything like this happens.
August 30th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
Thank you for this information. This is very helpfull for me.
I hope what steve affraid was it is not happend to any other.
August 30th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Yeah, that’s the proper solution. Kick ‘em with your banhammer, folks!
August 30th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
never seen such ads.. btw thanks for the superb application.. i log in to statcounter like everyday
August 30th, 2009 at 8:00 pm
I haven’t seen anything too racy or pornographic. There are flash ads that move across the screen and block my links though.
I have tried to click on your ads in the past at random, as I know that’s essential to you guys generating income. This is such a fabulous service, and I want to support it, but on principle I don’t do anything more than close my browser if those annoying exploding/moving ads show up.
Best to you guys and thanks again!
StatCounter Team Response:
Hi Gregoire,
We know how frustrating it is to have these kind of expanding ads block the screen so we don’t want our members to have to put up with them. We do allow some user controlled ads, but no ads should expand across your page automatically. If one of these auto-expanding ads slips through our filters, please let us know ASAP.
Please follow the instructions in the blog and report the ad directly to us using this form.
Thanks so much!
August 30th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
How about removing the evonyonline.com flash ads
with pornographic woman ad images (seems a gaming site once you click on it)
StatCounter Team Response:
Hi Pantarei,
Please follow the instructions in the blog and report any unsavoury ads directly to us. For quick assistance, please contact support directly using this form.
We would be happy to investigate and remove any ads that contravene our “family-friendly” policies.
Thanks so much!

I check Statcounter a few times a day..never saw any ‘Nasty ads”
August 31st, 2009 at 8:03 am
The kinky ads, i havent spotted them, and i am on statcounter.com 2times/day. Oh and you could put more ads, some other tipes not just google ads. i am clicking them, because they are intresting. (i don`t want to help you
)
August 31st, 2009 at 7:54 pm
Don’t think I saw them but then again I do use adblockers so don’t tend to see most ads…
September 1st, 2009 at 1:17 am
I feel a little guilty because I use firefox with the ad block plus plugin. I have never seen any kind of ad on statcounter. Ad block plus makes for a whole different surfing experience.
September 1st, 2009 at 2:17 am
Really sad things like this happen to such a good product and such great people who care and work hard to keep things moving in the right direction. I haven’t noticed anything like this and I’m always checking. But thanks in advance.
September 1st, 2009 at 11:28 am
Honestly, i don’t think this is that problematic, 1.) i did not notice any ads that i found offensive/nasty in any way and 2.) if it helps you pay your bills, i don’t think the majority of the statcounter users would complain as long as the pricing structure stays the way it is…
September 1st, 2009 at 12:35 pm
I haven’t found any nasties so far and I’m tracking 10 of my sites so I am accessing the stats page every day. But thanks for the warning, I’ll let you know if I have any problems.
September 1st, 2009 at 11:10 pm
Much thanks for taming those unruly ads! Also for a great service I’ve come to rely upon.
Take care,
John

September 3rd, 2009 at 12:54 am
So far i didnt c any nasty ads showing up at my browser yet.
Keep up the good work!
September 3rd, 2009 at 1:47 am
We trust in Statcounter. You really are working seriously.
September 3rd, 2009 at 6:57 am
Totally off topic, but…
I have had stat-counter counting away faithfully on my page making me happy, but have never had any info returned to the stats page. I am assuming that I have embedded the code successfully if it is counting but why no stats return?
September 3rd, 2009 at 12:05 pm
I haven’t logged in for a bit so missed the ad drama but I wanted to take the opportunity to say stat counter rocks.
I have had both paid and free accounts over the years and statcounters free service beats most paid ones for clarity and ease of use.
At the moment you guys help me keep track of about 30 sites and I adore you for it.
so … Statcounter rocks
September 3rd, 2009 at 10:03 pm
I haven’t seen any nasty ads here, everything is as usual to its best.
Have been using SC from last 2 years and you are the best .
thanks
September 4th, 2009 at 8:23 am
As statcounter we try to keep way all the malware of the internet.
We have to be responsable for what you present to your clients.
Thank you statcounter very good job.
September 4th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
I have to say that I’ve never really noticed any of the adverts on statcounter.com! I don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing for the advertisers — sometimes advertising is subliminal and gets in your brain without you realising!
Keep up the good work guys.
September 4th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
Thats what i like about the statcounter.
September 4th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
This is very thoughtful of Statcounter. Thanks for caring.
September 5th, 2009 at 8:56 am
absolutely the best stat product around, and I’ve used a lot of them.
those ads are everywhere, so I personally don’t even notice them, but if they offend some people, you’re doing a great service by offering to attempt to intervene.
September 5th, 2009 at 9:33 pm
Everything is OK here in Greece…
Thanks for your work!!
September 6th, 2009 at 4:34 am
Hi,
Thanks for your quick response. And that why i like your site.
Regards
Madhan.
September 7th, 2009 at 9:58 am
Didn’t see any irritating adds or pop ups on this site yet. But admitting that you do have this unfortunately is a proof of excellent customer service that you are giving to thousands of people every day.
September 7th, 2009 at 10:06 am
Anyway, i didn’t saw thenasty ads, but thanks for the imformation…

No problem - I’ve only ever noticed the Adsense ads from Google and nothing nasty!
Thanks,
Dave.
September 8th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
I have always seen Google ads running on Statcounter and have never experienced any issues whatsoever. It’s nice that you acted promptly and took care of the issue so soon. Great service. Great people. Always the best. Just use Statcounter, ignore the rest.
September 8th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
All ads are nasty!
Feature request: Live stats that update automatically.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
There a free addon for Firefox called Adblock Plus which works like a charm. And websites suddenly look so much nicer without the capitalist clutter!
StatCounter, keep up the good work and thanks for your concern.
September 9th, 2009 at 4:15 am
OT - but I have been waiting patiently for EXIT LINKS to appear on my stat summary as i thought this was automatic with an upgrade that appears to have been and gone and they don’t show still… Does htis mean I have no way of finding this info for the past few months, only if I now add a new project?
September 9th, 2009 at 6:03 am
No problems here in Beijing, China. Love your service
September 9th, 2009 at 9:22 am
I believe everything is working fine
September 9th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Just like to say that I had a few sites infected a few months back, blocked by Google and even worse a warning on the listings telling searches that my site(s) might infect them.
Changed sever passwords and removed google adds and within a week all was fine.
This site services is fantastic and has never ever given me cause for concern.
I don’t think I’ve heard of a site telling you it had been infected, most would have just dealt with the problem and kept quiet - not these boy’s and that’s one of the reason I like and trust them so much.
Keep up the good work.
September 10th, 2009 at 4:58 am
This is a problem we all face and Google Adsense has become a terrible culprit for unsuitable and inappropriate ads - we’ve seen “Get your African woman” [sic] and worse… it should be the DUTY of an Ad Agency to filter all ads PRIOR to approving them — Google cannot do that as it has a model that scales for maximum profit with minimum human intervention.
We are in the process of setting up or investing in an ad agency that serves ONLY QUALITY ads - we believe there is a market for this. If any publishers are interested (IDEALLY having at least 1 million page views per month) please do contact us to be included on launch list - it will also help investors and quality advertisers to know that we have more clients upcoming beyond beta testing.
You will be required to javascript or iframe code into your site which will not show any ads until the launch. Revenue sharing is on a 50% basis. Email mathaba@gmail.com if you are interested - thank you and once again hats off to StatCounter the most moral, ethical and principled e-business of huge customer base that we know of. RESPECT!
September 10th, 2009 at 9:18 am
Thanks as ever for your dilligence, mostly I see relevant web design related ads, often quite useful!
September 11th, 2009 at 12:24 am
i saw those ’suddenly enlarging’ ads a few days back but things seem to be as usual today!
statcounter is the best counter ever. many paid counters do not provide as good service as your good counter provides. I highly recommend statcounter to all my friends.
September 11th, 2009 at 10:00 am
Never had a problem yet - but thanks for the heads up.
Keep up your excellent service.
September 11th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
It’s great to see your efforts to keep the website clean. That make a difference.
Statcounter outperforms its competitor
Anyway, I didn’t see any dirty ads.
September 11th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

September 12th, 2009 at 8:22 am

September 13th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
No problems here..
I love your service.
September 13th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
it’s okay, StatCounter service is wonderful !
September 14th, 2009 at 4:21 am
Since the ads are in an iframe, they have limited access. However, if your computer is infected with malware or spyware, chances are good that the advertisement iframe is talking to the spyware. It is not this website, as the website that is inside the iframe is not hosted here. (An iframe is a browser window built-into a webpage. It has a separate URL and permissions, and has a separate history and refresh.)
If you, the developers of stat-counter, add a button next to the advertisement, for reporting violations… That would simplify things a little more.
Perhaps you should create a new website. One that demands all ads confirm to a standard set of rules.
1. Must be served from an approved and valid SSL HTTPS connection.
2. Must have a unique ID for reporting.
3. Must have a “CLOSE” button, which instantly terminates the ad.
- Located in the top-right, minimum of 20px x 20px.
4. Must be silent, with a “PLAY” or “VOLUME”, on/off button.
- Located in the bottom-right, minimum of 20px x 20px.
5. Must have a “REPORT” button, which is links the ID to our reporting-agent URL.
6. Must not contain an internal IFRAME, or load content from another URL or IP that does not match the delivering URL or IP.
7. Must not attempt to install or activate non-browser related programs.
8. Must be non-persistent and self-terminate after 20 seconds of stalled loading. (One dead ad will stop the rest of a page from loading.)
9. Must only have one exit-point link, with the exception of the “REPORT” link.
10. Must not feature content that is unacceptable for public display.
Ok, get to work, I laid-down the foundation… well, I did spread the lime-powder… just add water, mix, surface, let it set, and harden… Um, then build walls, plumbing, electrical, AC, roof, paint, shingles, inspected, and move-in!
LOL.
I am sure that you are big enough, to be selective with the ads you allow. Advertise your stats, and sell your own space.
September 14th, 2009 at 8:30 am
I am using adblocker in our office network. So I am safe from any spyware & malware in Ads. Anyway I hope StatCounter is safe as they are aware of security issue.

Don’t know if this is related, but stats haven’t updated all day, despite ongoing site traffic. The stats seem to have been locked in where they were earlier this morning and have not been updated at all, i.e., none of the subsequent visits have been registered.
September 23rd, 2009 at 4:28 am
Thanks for bring us up to speed and forthcoming
September 23rd, 2009 at 6:34 pm
Just a little slow on the pages loading … But other than that everything is cool!
Keep up the great work StatCounter!
September 23rd, 2009 at 7:30 pm
Thanks for fixing, love the advert graphic!
September 23rd, 2009 at 8:37 pm
I’ve read a few references to Google Adsense here. I just wanted to let everyone know, though google may not be evil, Adsense kind of is. They don’t care very much wether they show adds on your site that you disapprove of.
Trying to ban such adds yourself is almost impossible without clicking them many times to track them through multiple redirects. But beware, this action WILL get you banned. (like it did to me)
So what I am trying to say here is that if you find an Adsense ad that you would like StatCounter to get rid of, keep in mind that the StatCounter staff cannot click the ad to get it’s many redirect links. If you are able to provide these links to StatCounter, it will make it much easier for the StatCounter staff to get these ads removed.
Thanks to all of you at StatCounter for such a great way to track my websites usage. I’ve tried other services, in two words, “they suck” compared to StatCounter.
Thanks!
September 24th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Can this tracker track the time that a user is on the site? Thanks
September 25th, 2009 at 7:09 am
everything is cool!
Keep up the great work StatCounter!
thanks

I’ve noticed that stuff I’ve been searching on in Google, car parts stuff, appears as ads on SC. I’m going to run adaware see if that clears it.

This is not a nasty ad, but it seems to be completely fraudulent.
http ://www.smallbizcenter.info/magniwork.php?apid=A3M&apflag=1&v=1
The ad appeared as the top banner on the StatCounter page. The advertiser sells plans for a perpetual motion machine, even using the phrase “perpetual Motion” in their ad. For $197 they will sell you the plans to build your own perpetual motion machine, running on magnets.
I’m an electronics professional and a physics buff and I know that’s impossible, but there are an awful lot of people who don’t know, and can be suckered into contributing to this scheme. For $197 they’re selling the proverbial free lunch.
I’ve taken screen shots and can post them to you if you like. And I do want to thank you for your very fine service. I’ve been using StatCounter since 2004, and I keep recommending you to all my friends who run websites and blogs. Thank you!

I would like to comment on your advertising. Ads on the side regarding amazing new tooth whitening method, discovered by accident by an Amanda Bell in Shelburne Nova Scotia.
I know everyone in this community of 600 people. There is no Amanda Bell here. There are three dentists here. None of them Famous and none have ever been on CNN, such as is described in the advert.
How does one get stunning before and after shots using a product they accidentally happened upon and didn’t know worked after they tried numerous other methods and took no before and after shots of those.
This is a sham and these people should be put out of business. Certainly, they should not be affiliated with Statcounter.

And just to be clear, I am one of the three dentists in this area.

why does the new statcounter project overview page look really bad now?
it used to be nicely formatted, now its all plain and ugly.
the left-hand menu is also screwed, way too low…
and lots of other pages on the website also look real bad.
that change is since recently. the site looked real good for a long time, but no more.
whats up?
