Since the last ice age, the Matier Glacier has been retreating and
leaving behind debris including glacial silt. Glacial till is the mixture of clay, sand, pebbles, cobbles, and boulders that
results from an extremely heavy glacier grinding through valleys. When
suspended in water, the glacial till creates the classic blue lake water colour.
This photograph below shows an accumulation of stones and other debris at
the foot of the glacier that is called moraine.
