The Saint Lazaria National Wildlife Refuge or St. Lazaria Island is a nesting bird colony located twenty miles west of Sitka, Alaska and is a part of the Gulf of Alaska unit of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. It is located in Sitka Sound, just south of Kruzof Island, and within the limits of the City and Borough of Sitka, Alaska. St. Lazaria is a very rugged looking island with limited and difficult access. Its direct exposure to the Pacific Ocean makes it ideal for birds to inhabit. Most likely the island is a volcanic plug — the remnants of an old an eroded volcano — which would make St. Lazaria an older volcanic cousin to the adjacent Mount Edgecumbe on Kruzof Island. The island itself is low with broken terrain due to its volcanic origins. Its highest point is 160 feet above sea level and there are two small summits on the island with a low, treeless saddle connecting the two that can often be overcome by waves during storms and at high tide. There are many cliffs that can get up to 90 feet tall and shoot strait into the ocean as well as sea-level caves that can be explored on a calm day by thrill-seeking individuals in small craft. The hill was named for Alexander Baranof and the opulent Chief Manager's house that stood upon the hill from 1837 to 1894. Baranov himself never lived there, however, since he died 18 years prior to its completion.
The ceremony that passed control of Alaska to the US took place here. (Sewards Follies)

From: Steve Reid To: Octobre / Alaskan Reel Affair Charters Cc: barbara reid, Bob Reid
Subject: Coming your way.....
Date: Tuesday, August 12, 2008
Octobre, There will be a box arriving at your place via UPS sometime soon. I think that this is something that you & Tim will enjoy, especially after the season is over. It is from a new, favorite place of mine & my wifes, very near where we live. Kind of like "our local gold" to you very much like the incredible salmon we enjoy as a result of our trips with you in Sitka (and did this weekend!). It is my sisters' and my way of saying thanks to you for both your friendship over the years but especially for the incredible care you gave my dad during his last trip with you. Not only the great personal care, food & kindness shown but the extreme extra effort and time you took away from all else that you had to do that week to make sure he was taken care of and that all the extra details were taken care of by you. I do not think it is a reach to say that without your help and care the day you got him to the hospital I may not be still able to enjoy having him with us to look forward to next years trip back to Sitka!! I will continue to wear my Alaskan Reel Affair cap out locally and when I am asked about it I will have an even better recommendation to offer than what I normally do. You and Tim are the best.......Steve and Barbara (my little sis)
(Thank you ~ i am blushing ...) O.

St. Pete's is on Lincoln Street - directly across from Crescent Harbor - a beautiful little church - fantastic view ~ the architecture is classic & simple ~
Located in the busy downtown area of Sitka, the sanctuary of St. Peter's by-the-Sea is open 24-hours a day for visitors and people seeking a moment of peace in their workday world. Unlike so many churches that are finding it necessary to lock their doors during non-worship service hours, St. Peter's has made it their policy to welcome all people at any time.

Yes; for those of you who are wondering they got a taste of the nasty seas we just had also ~
Departure day? perfect - couldn't get better - Mother nature at her best ~
I think bad water should be prior to May 15th & after September 1: that is what I think ... apparently i have no clout with the weather gods...
i should have ~ but i don't.

so for those of you who know Roman ~ ask your selves - (they fished Roman 2 of their 5 days) did Roman have fun? YES INDEED ... and prior to fishing them? he had stage fright ~ poor guy ... but it was a Kick! he had a really good time! Our Guests? they asked if they could stay with Roman for the remainder of the trip - but i was not able to accomodate them. (prior requested bookings)

Week of 7/6/08
USCG Air Station Sitka launched two Jayhawk Helo's to Glacier Bay offering assistance in any way possible.
I would've given my Eye Teeth to be a fly on the wall inside that Helo.
You can only imagine all the little "one liners" i can come up with.
Like this in an advetisment: Cruise Line offers a new Junket: CLAMMING!
OR try this this on for size: When they needed a Captain? This individual was the MOST qualified.

Nice Butt!
|
 |
|
|
 |
I was going to say Jimmy Stout is holding my "butt" :>
But then i got to thinking - actually he's holding his "butt". ;)
What i ment by "my Butt" is that these are the size halibut Tim and I keep for our freezer - & we live here - we have opportunity to take the larger fish ... We go for the Quality - so YES, Jimmy is holding "my butt" ...

Mr. Darryl Shepard, and behind him is "Dad" Harry Barber.
Well? I gotta say - these guys (Gentlemen) have fished with us for quite some time now. We met them at the Redmond, Oregon Sportsman Show, an ISE Show (the first one they ever did there) ~ a friend of ours was in the booth with Tim & Jeremy when Del walked by ... Who also knew our friend Bruce Hanson aka "Horse Hanson". Del introduced us to his friends and here we are today ...
with Tim Fishing Great Guys! (i get hugs...)

You gotta love it when my folks get off the plane and they just look at me & smile & they don't quit they just keep smiling ~ ~ so then i ask 'em " are you happy?
you look happy! ... they say I'm so glad i'm here ! i couldn't wait to get here! ...HOW'S FISHIN'???

Bob Zappetini ~ fishin' the morning bite.
These folks fished our 1/2 day freelance charter the 17th & 18th going home with 44 pounds.
Lets see - 44 pounds - 52 weeks a year, throw in a few holidays like Christmas, Easter, & Valentines day. That is about a pound almost every week for a year!
Plus, it was fun, it's good for you, and they took some R&R; at the same time ~ NICE!
thanks folks!

okay, it's late - i've been up since 4, and maybe i'm getting a bit rummy.
Is Shell giving that fish a friendly little smooch? Or is it more like a "Reel Affair"?

What is perfect about this halibut is it is not a breeder ~
Halibut weighing in at 100 + pounds are breeders - many halibut lay 3 Million eggs a year, with a survival rate of 1%. they are also not the best of food ~ this HALIBUT is a nice one - Congratulations!
