Sea Kayaking
Kayaking the shoreline along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is an experience that you will not want to miss. This is arguably the most beautiful shoreline in the United States, with crystal clear water in the largest freshwater lake in the world. Sandstone cliffs of beautiful reddish and orange hues rise vertically out of the shoreline nearly 200 ft. Ride the swells as you can hear the waves crashing into these rocks which carved beautiful caves, arches, and other natural formations that early explorers used for landmarks over 200 years ago. Paddle the same water as the Voyageurs, trappers, geologists, and Native Americans did as a resident population slowly came to the Upper Peninsula during the fur trading and exploration eras.
The cliffs are most prominent along the 15 mile stretch of shoreline between Sand Point and Little Beaver Lake. In some areas the cliffs rise over 200 feet above the lake. 

The name "Pictured Rocks" is due to the pictures that seem to appear on the rocks from the multicolored sandstone and mineral stains on the rock surface. The cliffs are composed of Cambrian sandstone dating back about 500 million years. The stains on the sandstone are caused by water running down the cliffs filled with oxides of copper, manganese, iron, and other organic minerals.
You will want to allow about 6 hours for this trip and of course it is very weather dependant based on the sea conditions. Departing from Miner's beach you can paddle beside the towering cliffs, explore caves, paddle under water seeps, and explore the multi-colored details of the shoreline bedrock. Our paddle brings us past the intriguing Ford Cove, 200ft cliffs, shipwreck of the "Superior", and the alluring caves of the Bloody Chiefs at Mosquito River.

Canoeing

Day Trip
The AuTrain River is a gentle paddle through the Hiawatha National Forest taking from 3-4 hours from the South Bridge to the "take out spot" at the North Bridge. Enjoy this delightful paddle where you might see a variety of birds and wildlife as they come down to the river to drink. You might see ducks, songbirds, great blue herons, kingfishers, muskrats, and turtles. Loons and eagles often soar overhead. Hiking and Mountain Biking - Grand Island

"Old woods, roads and trails run the perimeter of Grand Island offering many miles of hiking and biking to the most spectacular views one will find anywhere in the Upper Midwest. There are several rustic campsites on the island and white sand beaches that will thrill the visitor."

Hiking and mountain biking trails provide wonderful opportunities for day-trips and give access via unsurfaced trails to some of the Island's most breathtaking scenery.

If you are traveling to and from the Island on a passenger ferry, it is important to keep the ferry schedule in mind as you plan your time on the Island. Consider your level of fitness and your pace as you make route choices. For instance, a family planning a full day of biking on the Island can take a leisurely pace and travel up the southwest shore road, cut across the Island to Trout Bay Overlook, travel down to Trout Bay West Day Use Area for a picnic meal and leisurely beach walk, and finish the day with biking down along Murray Bay to Williams Landing. On the other hand, reasonably fit individuals can mountain bike the 23-mile perimeter trail around the main island in a full day, with brief stops and some exploration. Whether hiking or bicycling, the key is to know your pace and keep track of time.

NOTE: The Bridge across North Light Creek at the far north end of the island is washing out and is not safe to cross.

Currently, a hiking-only trail has been designated in the northeast part of the island, and the Thumb's travel ways are reserved for hiking-only use. In addition, there are many hiking/biking opportunities along the island's perimeter as well as its interior, providing a relatively secluded setting for hikers seeking a measure of solitude. Most of the hiking and mountain biking opportunities, though not officially designated, lie on old road beds, cross a variety of terrain and provide shoreline views. Bicycling off roads and trails is not allowed. Fishing
Fishing Charters are available on either Lake Superior of local inland lakes and rivers. Lake Superior trips consist of trolling for Lake Trout and Salmon. Inland Lake Fishing trips are for walleye, northern pike and smallmouth bass. Up to 5 persons can be accommodated on these trips and they are generally for a 5-6 hour period. On Lake Superior a 25 foot boat is used. Inland Lakes are generally fished from a pontoon boat. . Website is: www.uncleducky.com

Cost per trip is $550 for Lake Superior and $450 for inland lakes. This cost is a group cost.

Camping
Located just east of Munising on the shores of Lake Superior we recommend the Munising Tourist Park Campground. With 99 available sites 69 have electricity and there are 22 rustic tent camp sites. Just across the bay from Grand Island this campground is very centrally located, and just a wonderful location for enjoying the breezes of Lake Superior, having a campfire, and some bonding and relaxation time. Rental Camping Gear

If you would rather camp out along a beautiful lakeshore such as the Munising Tourist Park or other spots in the area and do not have any camping gear- No Worries- You can rent it from us. We can set you up with a tent or tents, cookware, sleeping pads, fire starters, campfire chairs, and everything else you’ll need. This package is good for up to 4-5 people. All you need to bring is a sleeping bag. This includes the campsite fee and even a popcorn popper. Call us 906-228-5447 and we’ll set you up. Cost is $99 per night for 4-5 people.

Ship Wreck Tours

Preserved by Lake Superior’s frigid waters, these doomed vessels lay on the bay bottom where they met their fates when the tempestuous Lake displayed its violent power.
History comes alive as you hear about these turn of the century wrecks. Explore shipwrecks aboard the Miss Munising , a 60′ Coast Guard Certified steel vessel equipped with specially designed through the hull glass viewing areas or the Fireball, the new addition to our fleet. Visit three shipwrecks on the bottom of the lake as seen through a glass viewing area. With fifty feet of visibility, these wrecks may now be seen by non-divers in comfort. (Dog Kennels provided.)

The two-hour tour covers a distance of about 10 miles and features sights both above and below the water. The Miss Munising pulls out of Munising harbor and heads toward Grand Island. This 13,000 acres of pristine wilderness has just a few settlements on it. Most of the island remains as it was during the fur-trading days of the Hudson Bay Company, which was established in 1670.

Join us for an enjoyable evening cruise around Grand Island on the Miss Munising, viewing the majestic rock formations of the Grand Island National Recreation Area. This 13,000 acre island features pristine wilderness, with just a few settlements, and remains as it was during the fur trading days of the Hudson bay Company. On the trip you’ll hear the history and view the towering rock cliffs that make up the island. You’ll also see the famous East Channel Lighthouse as well as the North Light, the highest lighthouse above sea level in North America.
