Mark Twain described Waimea Canyon as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific". The Canyon is 10 miles long, and 3,600 feet deep.

With tin roofs, no heat or air conditioning, these small wood cottages were built for the sugar cane plantation workers.

In 1938, Robert Allerton (a rich banker's son) steamed around Kauai on his private ship. Enchanted by Kauai, he bought a river canyon once owned by the Queen. He spent the rest of his life traveling the world for plants and trees to create what is now a National Botanical Garden.
