International AMBER Alert Plan Success Story
Greece
July 3, 2007
A 13-year-old boy from a small community in central Greece went missing on July
3, 2007. He was last seen on his bicycle around 10:30 a.m. near the field where
his father was working. His family searched the village where they resided and
when they could not locate the child, they called the police.
The police searched extensively but found no signs of the child or his
bicyle. They feared he may have been involved in an accident on
a nearby highway or abducted by a driver. To add to the difficultly of
the situation, the boy’s family had emigrated to Greece just two
months earlier and the boy did not speak any Greek.
The father contacted the Greek Centre for Missing & Exploited Children,
a division within The Smile of the Child. The Centre spoke to police,
who decided the case warranted an AMBER Alert
Hellas.
The Centre immediately activated the AMBER Alert system, which includes
sending the child’s descriptive information to all national and
local television and radio stations, airports, metro train stations,
highway and roadway signs, mobile phones and Internet service providers.
The Centre’s hotline received numerous leads.
Within a short time, the child was located safely several miles away, near
a secluded beach. He had gotten lost and could not find his way home.
The quick recovery was thanks to the joint efforts of nine ministries,
national television and radio stations, mobile phone companies, Internet
service providers, other private partners and the public. |
