Q: [WebmasterWorld] I heard Google techs post here?
A: In an unofficial capacity - yes.

Q: [WebmasterWorld] What can I do to help out the forums?
A: 1) use good descriptive titles. We are so busy now, that good titles are mandatory. Have title reflect the content of your post. An actual example:

not good: "check this out"
good: "my searches are case insensitive?"

2) Don't ask questions in the middle of another thread. If you have a question (other than a clarifing question that is on topic to the current thread), then please start a new thread.

3) If a thread about a subject is already going and you have a contribution relavant to the current topic, then contribute there.

4) Please post in the appropriate forum. Discussions about "linkage" should go in the Reciprocal links forum.

Q: [WebmasterWorld] You guys seem to love/hate Google in the same breath?
A: Those that love Google seem to think we hate it. Those that hate Google seem to think we love it. We think we've found the balance:

Q: [Google.com] What's a "Google"?
A: A "googol" is a huge number: 10 to the power of 100. That is more than the number of atoms in the universe. The company info page says: "We liked the spelling 'Google' better. It sounds cool and has only six letters."

Additionally, the name of the home base for Google is "Googleplex". The word googolplex is 10 to the googol power. The word Googol was first coined by Edward Kasner and James Newman in the creative book, Mathematics and the Imagination. Kasner's nephew came up with the word "Googol" to describe an impossibly huge number.

Q: [Google.com] Where did Google start?
A: At Stanford University in California as a research project in the comp-sci department. Approx time of first build: late 1997 early 1998. Later Google received a large sum ($25 million US) in seed capital from some of the same players that funded Yahoo's startup.

This is the 3rd major search engine to be born in the comp sci dept at Stanford. Yahoo and Excite were the other two.

It was started by students; Sergey Brin and Larry Page.

Q: [Google.com] How do you pronounce "google"?
A: It is pronounced. Goo - gall which rhymes with "bugle" and a baby's goo-goo cah-cah :)

Many promotion people do pronounce it Gah-gull as in "boogles the mind". Several linquists have insisted that semantically, it should be pronounced "Gah-gull" as in "boogle". It was a controversy a few years ago:

Q: [Google.com] I've run into a "click through" counter on my page at Google. Am I in trouble?
A: No. Google routinely runs tests, and part of that is comparing click throughs. It is nothing to be alarmed about and should disappear within a few weeks to a month.
Last Updated:02/17/2001 - 11:02 added by:Brett_Tabke

Q: [Google.com] Is there anyway to speed up Googles turn around time?
A: Not really. Google works at its own (often lethargic) pace. Two weeks to 90 days is the norm for new sites, and two weeks to 60 days for updated pages.

Q: [Google.com] What is http://wap.google.com?
A: Google offers a WAP search service and auto-proxy.

WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) is used by cell phones and other small screen hand held devices.

http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,289893,sid9_gci213337,00.html

You may use http://wap.google.com with a WAP based browser to view your site as a WAP user might by using a wap based browser such as Opera browser. If you do not have a wap based browser, you will only see the standard Google.com display because it is a cloaked site.

Q: [Google.com] How can I get Google to remove my phone number from it's index?
A: Use the removal page:

Last Updated:04/20/2002 - 23:39 added by:Brett_Tabke

Q: [Google.com] Why does the advanced search page look so bad?
A: Well honestly, it's a very poorly written page (128 html errors as of March-2002). It is not cross browser friendly and displays weird in many alternative browsers.

http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2764.htm

We can understand the need to cut a few non-critical HTML corners to save bandwidth on the search results pages. For those pages, every byte becomes multiplied tens of millions of times per day.

However in the remainder of the site, there is no reason for Google not to validate to full W3C HTML web standards. Either Google is just lazy in it's HTML programming, or just doesn't care. What ever the reason, it is misguided for a site of Googles size and stature.

Dear Google; Get with the program.

A: http://www.google.com/services/free.html
Last Updated:04/22/2002 - 12:54 added by:Brett_Tabke

Q: [Google.com] Why doesn't Google offer paid spidering?
A: "Google would lose a lot of credibility for this, just as their competitors have. I agree that Google could make money from paid spidering, and in their position I'd be tempted, but I don't think they're ready to give up the 'clean' image just yet." (-ciml)

Q: [Google.com] How can I get Google to remove Personal information?
A: You probably can't if you don't own the site the information is on. If you do have control of the page, you can use the Google removal page:

http://www.google.com/remove.html

Q: [Google.com] What is SPAM?
A: Start by visiting the SPAM museum:
http://www.hormel.com/

It has been our experience that 90 to 95 percent of the "spam" that has been reported in Google search results is not spam at all. There is no real way of knowing what Google considers to be problem search results or site areas.

A few things we do know that are not neccessarily problems with Google:

Keyword Stuffing:
The most often misreported and least understood "spam" with Google. Google's algo is based on PageRank which counts the numbers and quality of inbound links to a page. Thus, keyword stuffing that is prevalant with other search engines, has no major decernable affect on Google. Minor and longer phrases were there are limited results may have some small impact, but not enough to report it as spam.

What happens is that the Google spider will often run into pages designed for other search engines. Sometimes those pages are legitimate parts of other se's cloaked or trusted feed programs.

Tricky Redirects or Cloaked Pages:
There are so many legitimate uses for pages such as these, it is impossible to deduce whether a page was intended to decieve a search engine, or just part of the normal site.

Googlebot is so aggressive at following links and finding obscure pages, that it often runs into things that were not designed with a search engine in mind. Meta refreshes, auto 404's, cloaked language feeds, or browser specific cloaking, can often appear in search results as if it were a problem.

Q: [Google.com] Is there a way to find Google answers?
A: Depends on what you want answered ;)

If it is a general purpose question, you can visit Google "answers" and for a fee, ask a question.

If it is a Google related question, then ask a question in the Google forum. Some of the best search engine optimizers in the world hang out and answer questions there. You can do it free of charge, or donate to WebmasterWorld if you feel the service is of value:

Q: [Search] I've tried searching with an OR, but it doesn't seem to work?

Q: [Search] What are all the Google search options?
A: Most of the search options can not be combined. Their usage may at times produce surprising or seemingly unpredictable results.
link:url. Shows other pages with links to url.
related:url same as "what's related" on serps.
site:domain restricts search results to the given domain.
allinurl: shows only pages with all terms in the url.
inurl: like allinurl, but only for the next query word.
allintitle: shows only results with terms in title. "allintitle:webmasterworld google" finds only pages with webmasterworld and google in the title.
intitle: similar to allintitle, but only for the next word. "intitle:webmasterworld google" finds only pages with webmasterworld in the title, and google anywhere on the page.
cache:url will show the Google version of the passed url.
info:url will show a page containing links to related searches, backlinks, and pages containing the url. This is the same as typing the url into the search box.
spell: will spell check your query instead of searching for it.
stocks: will lookup the search query in a stock index.
filetype: will restrict searches to that filetype. "-filetype:doc" to remove Microsoft word files.
daterange: is supported in Julian date format only. http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2812.htm

Google also supports AND/OR via the standard Altavista syntax:
+: used in front of a search term requires that term be on the pages returned. (mainly, the + is used to search for stop words ex:+of +the).
-: used in front of a search term to exclude any pages with this search term in it.
AND: in between words and in capitals, requires both be present on search results pages.
OR: in between words and in capitals, specifies that either search terms may be present.
": surround words with quotes to require the exact phrase be present.
*: There has been some experimentation with the wildcard character "*" in 2002. Your results may vary.

Unusual Search Features:
dictionary: after a search, there is a link under the word (in the blue bar - you'll have to look for it) to dictionary.com
maps: If you enter a street address, a link to Yahoo Maps and to MapBlast will be presented.
stocks: enter a stock symbol and Google will present a link quicken.excite.com that looks up the stock. (see "stocks:" above)
phone: enter anything that looks like a phone number to have a name and address displayed. Same is true for something that looks like an address (include a name and zip code)
news: searches news.google.com. http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2776.htm

Catalogs:
use http://catalogs.google.com/ to search through scanned and submitted catalogs.

Q: [Search] What is the "I'm feeling Lucky Button" for? All I get is some other site!
A: That automatically redirects you to the first search result for the site. Most people find that they really aren't that lucky ;)

Q: [Search] How do I find how many pages Google has indexed from my site?
A: One possibility is a combination of the site attribute and the + attribute. The site attribute specifies that the search should be restricted to this domain. The + is used in front of www and com because www and com are stop words.
site:www.webmasterworld.com "+www.webmasterworld.+com"

Q: [Search] What is Google spell:?
A: Miss spell a common word and Google will present alternatives. Try searching from "hliday" and Google will present you with, did you mean holiday? and a more link.

update Apr-18-2002 Google is now testing this feature as an automatic redirection. When an assume misspelling occurs and no results are returned, Google will redirect to the suggested spelling. (-Lisa)
http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2673.htm

Clicking on the suggested spelling will search on that word, and the "more" link will take you to alternatives where you can select related searches.

You can also view the "suggested spellings" page with a special search construct. For example:

spell:hliday

Will search for suggestions on hliday. Just add "spell:" in front of any word to get a suggestion. (-rpking)

Q: [Search] How do I restrict a search to .org or .net domains on Google?
A: The only way, is to put in "org" or "net" in the search query. Google does not support restrictions based on top level domains.

Q: [Search] Does Google virus check files it links too?
A: No. It would require vast amounts of processor work to be able to do it. Your best bet is to enable all security checks in your browser when surfing, and do not launch unknown files or file types.

Q: [Submission] Is there a submission limit on Google?
A: None that we are aware of, but Google recommends no more than five urls per day. You really don't need to submit more than that as Google only needs the root url submitted.

Q: [Submission] Does it help to submit sub-pages to Google?
A: On established domains that are already found in Google, you may want to submit new content to them so that it is assured of getting in the next update.

On brand new sites that are not listed in Google, it doesn't do a great deal of good. Simply submit the root page, and allow Google to crawl through the entire site. Make sure all pages are linked to at least one other page on the site and that each page has at least one link to it from elsewhere on the site. Google does not care for Orphans and will not index them.

Q: [Submission] Does it help to submit my listing within the ODP and Yahoo?
A: Not really. Google routinely spiders or uses that data. Some people submit them anyway. No data available on if it helps at all.

Q: [Submission] Why does an unsubmitted and unindexed page show a pr value?
A: You will often see a PageRank value for a site that is unindexed by Google. There is a certain amount of a "guess" factor involved in the Toolbar PageRank value. What is assumed is happening, is that pr value is "inherited" from the root of the domain.

Q: [Submission] Can I submit my IP address to Google?
A: Yes, however there is no guarantee that you will be indexed or listed. Often, Google will attempt to resolve the IP address into a domain name. It will also treat the IP address as though it were a different domain. Neither of these situations is beneficial.

Q: [Submission] How long - Dmoz site to show up on Google?
A: Normally, the directory is updated once a month on Google. However, there have been changes in the update rate (March 2002), and it becomes a question of timing. It should be included within 8 weeks of it appearing on Dmoz.org.
Last Updated:04/21/2002 - 23:46 added by:Brett_Tabke

Q: [Submission] Should I let Google "find me" instead of submitting?
A: We have found no evidence that this is true. What we have found true, is that you should try to get a few links that Google knows about before submitting. Google isn't fond of "linkless" orphan sites. Often, orphan sites may not make it into the index until it acquires some inbound links that Google knows about through indexing of other sites.

Q: [Googlebot] How deep will the Google crawler go?
A: We know of no limit other than url length. However, you are best to keep all links less than 3 to 4 deep, and directories to a reasonable standard (less than 4-5 deep).

There has been some evidence presented to suggest that crawl depth is related to a sites PageRank value:

Q: [Googlebot] Does Google crawl the side bar AdWords links?
A: Normally, it doesn't and you are recommended to submit the site via the normal method. We believe that when you purchase one of the ads, Google automatically adds the site to its submission base if it is not already listed. There is no evidence to support Google increasing the rankings on the rest of the site as a result of purchasing advertisements on Google.

Q: [Googlebot] What is "fresh" next to my listing?
A: For the last two years, Google has performed one major update on a monthly bases. That update includes data from a full web crawl (spidering). This includes a full recalculation of PageRank values.

Recently (dec 2001) Google has begun spidering certain pages and sites on a weekly, or daily basis. When Google performs these "mini updates" on a site, it lists a "fresh" tag next to the site in the directory.

Some webmaster data indicates that there is a very small increase in click rates when your page has a "Fresh!" tag next too it.

Q: [Googlebot] Googlebot hit my main page that I submitted and then stopped? Is this normal?
A: Google spreads out its spider schedule as much as possible. It is not unusual for Google to work in seemingly bizarre ways. It will be back eventually to spider the whole site. Depending on the time of the month, Googlebot will go after the whole site, or slowly over the month. It just depends on when Google last updated its database. New submissions close to their update schedule will get spidered in full immediately. Older submissions will occur over the entire month.

Q: [Googlebot] I have 100 domains on a server, how do I slow down the unstoppable Googlebot?
A: Not much you can do. It is not unheard of for Google to hammer a server with hundreds of domains at the rate of 10pages per second for hours. You can try contacting Google, but you probably don't want too. Here is a perfect occasion to cloak. Reduce your page size that you send Google (they love smaller pages).

Q: [Indexing] How often does Google request my robots.txt?

Q: [Indexing] Does Google index dynamic content?
A: It will in certain instances. What criteria is used to determine if a dynamic page is indexable is debatable. Most have found that clean, high ranking (High page rank) sites can get dynamic content indexed.

Problems:
Sites that use session tracking urls to give each visitor a dynamic url. These sites can generate an infinite amount of pages for a spider to visit. These types of pages, are usually blocked from being indexed by Google.

If a sites dynamic urls change between spidering. If possible, treat your dynamic urls as though they were static and never changing.

Q: [Indexing] What is the relationship between the cached page date, and a Google spider visit?
A: The update at the main Google site, is often up to 60 days behind. Sometimes Google can get "stuck" showing a very old version of a cached page. Email them at help@google.com and report it. Remember to stay micro-brief and to the exact point with search engine email - no more than 4 lines at 80 characters and clip your sig file.

Q: [Keywords] What are the best keywords to choose for Google?
A: So Yahoo shows Google results when they can't find a category match. Go look for empty categories on Yahoo - target those keywords and wait 60 days :)

The theory is to look for keyword sets that are not getting much action. Those keywords are much easier to rank under with little effort. It's easier to get 100 referrals off of a dozen 4-5 word phrases than it is to get 100 referrals off of 1 two or three word phrase.

Q: [Keywords] How can I determine how many searches are done on a keyword?
A: Google does not provide an Overture like keyword suggestion tool:

It does however provide a smaller scale but similar system via it's AdWords advertising program.

http://adwords.google.com

Just test out an ad in preview mode:

Q: [Keywords] Is there a way to find when users use a misspelled word?
A: Google provides alternative spellings for search terms. The "Did you mean xyz" search links when a commonly misspelled term is encountered. It's a great time saver.

example search for "search engine":
http://www.google.com/search?q=serch+engine

Which returns a link, "did you mean search engine?".

One esoteric fact about the feature is the form string values used when you click on the alternative spelling link. The spelling links contains a new field "spell=1". For example the above search returns:

http://www.google.com/search?q=search+engine

While the alternative spelling link produces a string that includes spell=1:
http://www.google.com/search?q=search+engine&;spell=1

If you watch your referral logs for that extra field "spell=1" in search strings, that should be a great clue about which of your core keywords are misspelled. If you find 30 referrals for keyword "skipper" and find 10 of them contained "spell=1", then it is a safe bet that users are using the wrong spellings. You should investigate alternative spellings for that keyword.

How long Google will retain the spell=1 field is unknown. It is surely used as their own internal feature tracking method. Might as well be aware of it and use it while it is there.

Q: [Webmasters] How do I stay out of the Google "cache".
A: There is a Google NO ARCHIVE meta tags.

META NAME="GOOGLEBOT" CONTENT="NOARCHIVE"

Google software engineers have stated that the NOARCHIVE tag will NOT decrease your rankings. They have stated that NOARCHIVE is not even considered in the algo at this time. They further have stated in interviews that it MAY come into play at some point.

Tips that have been suggested for dealing with the "cache":

  • Put double or triple the number of advertisements on the page. When someone views the copy at Google, you will at least get something out of it.
  • remove any graphics from Google fed pages. At least you won't take the bandwidth hit.
  • Feed less content, and more loss leader type content "click here to read Part 2"..etc.
  • Feed more links that come down into your site.
  • Put a graphic based counter on the page so you can track just how much traffic you are losing and determine if it is worth it to allow Google to brand the page.
  • try a javascript redirect on Google pages to over ride the Google page display. (although it is rumored that Google is actively seeking out such pages for removal - may not work).

Things that are NOT advisable are:
  • Emailing and requesting Google not to cache your page. Google may ban you for life if you do. Googles own info on it says you will be banned for life:
    http://www.google.com/remove.html
  • Using a meta refresh. Most meta refreshed pages get buried real deep. So deep it will be difficult to find the page under your own domain name.

Q: [Webmasters] What is Google RF'ing or Google Bombing?
A: RF'ing is an obscene description of manipulating Googles page rank. RF: Rat F*ing (We'll trust you can fill in the star).

Over the last year (1999-2000) and a half there have been incidents where people have been able to generate results on Google pointing at some competitors domain under obscene or negative keywords. Sometimes it is a fluke, like the famous "who's more evil" than bill gates type search that returned Microsoft.com as a search result.

Other times it is fully intentional. When people are able to manipulate Google in this fashion, it is called RF'ing. The term recently surfaced in SEO circles after the legendary Google "dumb mother f*er" search that returned a page promoting President George Bush. Despite rumors to the contrary, we believe it was an intentional "RF" against another site.

The RF terminology is a reference to the 1968 and 1972 campaigns where Richard Nixon's campaign employed a dirty tricks squad that would go around and RF the opponents with various forms of college frat house pranks. The most famous being the 1968 Muskie letter that had very negative connotations. The group responsible for the tricks was known as the rf squad. The term has also grown recently because there are rumored to be "RF squads" working for major software manufactures employed to "rf" the competition.

Q: [Webmasters] How does Google feel about cloaking?
A: Let's start with a few facts:

Fact 1) Google IP cloaks it's sites. People in the UK are redirected to google.co.uk and so on and so forth throughout the world.

Fact 2) Google agent cloaks it's main site. Use one browser and you get a different version of Google than if you use a standard browser.

They've said numerous times at conferences that they understand completely where warranted (such as Flash sites). Other times they have said they consider all cloaking bad. Still other times they have said it is on a case by case basis.

As long as you are cloaking in context with quality content, there is nothing that should bother Google at all. Many people have cloaked for several years with Google and never got into a problem. Remember 2 things:

- the cached page is there for viewing.
- requesting to stay out of the cache will may harm your rankings.

With that in mind, some fun things you can do with cloaking and Google:
- give them more advertisements so that at least when someone views a page out of the Google copy, you get something out of it. (even if it is a stale ad).
- give them more links to follow, and support your friends with more links on the Google page (for PageRank purposes).
- use fewer graphics with Google so that when someone views a page out of the cache, you do not take a bandwidth hit for it.
- add links to Google on the page. Google loves pages that link to Google.

To cloak or not to cloak? You make the call.

If you really want to know how Google feels about cloaking, view their search results pages in a variety of browsers and compare the source code. If it is good enough for them to cloak and agent deliver, it is good enough for us.

Q: [Webmasters] Does liberal usage of the NOINDEX help a sites ranking?
A: It neither helps nor hurts a sites rankings in any way that we are aware of.

If you have large sections of your site you need to block off, you would probably be better off using a robots.txt exclusion:

Q: [Webmasters] My site is showing in duplicate at "www" and not www. What should I do?
A: Most hosting companies provide transparent www and not www versions of domains.
eg: http://www.webmasterworld.com is the same site as http://webmasterworld.com

Normally, Google will detect that the two pages are identical. This can be a problem for dynamically generated sites that have subtle differences per each page load. You can setup complex robots.txt under certain circumstances to circumvent the problem. You can also ask your host to properly setup a "302, 303, 304" redirect from the nonWWW to the real WWW domain. If you use the redirect method, Google will see the redirect and understand it should only index the full www address.

Q: [Webmasters] How do I get a page removed from Google?
A: Visit Googles remove page for more info on the process:
http://www.google.com/remove.html
http://www.google.com/intl/en_extra/remove.html

It involves placing a "remove" page full of links to be removed. You place the page on the site in question to verify to Google that you really do own the site and then notify them via email.

In situations where you do not control the information (such as page jacking), yet you need content removed, it is doubtful Google will comply. Contact them at googlebot@google.com. There really isn't much Google will do in those situations.

Q: [Webmasters] Should I remove my Google affiliate links since the program is discontinued?
A: That is up to you. If the search box is something your users come back for and brings traffic to your site (doubtful), you may want to leave it. There are no rules about such dealings. Our feeling is that unless site owners remove affiliate links when programs are closed, it will only encourage people to set up "fake" lost leader affiliate programs. The whole point with some programs is to get people to put up boxes with the full knowledge that they will remain after programs are concluded.

Q: [Webmasters] I have a page showing "untitled". What does it mean?
A: It means Google found out about your site from someone elses hyperlink and has yet to actually index the site. These types of unfound links are decreasing in number on Google.

Q: [Webmasters] My competitors sites are listed 1,2,3,4,5. What can I do?
A: If they include very dodgy tactics, you can try to report them to Google, but Google will probably not do anything about it. Multi-domains are a legitimate net practice used by millions of sites. It is quite common to find one set of sites dominating the results at Google.

Your best line of action is to get 4 more domains and let the games begin.

Q: [Webmasters] How big of a problem are duplicate pages?
A: They can be a serious problem for a website. There are both legitimate and illegitimate uses of duplicate pages. The best thing to do, is put a noindex tag on those that you don't want indexed.

Q: [Serps] How can I get Google to list my sites description properly?
A: You mean by removing the excerpted style of search results? You can't directly influence what Google displays, but you can get it to list your Dmoz description for that page. You do it by using the NOSNIPPETS metatag.

META NAME="GOOGLEBOT" CONTENT="NOSNIPPET"

That will probably leave your description blank on Google if it does not have a corresponding DMOZ directory entry.

By removing snippets, you also remove cached pages.

Q: [Serps] How can I get Google to stop showing a version of my site?
A: As I see it you have two approaches.

1. Go after the offending site. This can be hard if they're in another jurisdiction, but if someone hijacks your content then they are the offender, not Google.

2. Complain to their hosting provider. You can look at the domain registry records and other Internet data to find where their provider is based.

3. File a Digital Millennium Copyright Act notice with Google.

Q: [Serps] What does PDF mean next to a search results?
A: PDF (Portable Document format) is a format used by Adobe Acrobat Reader for many documents on the web. Often nicknamed Proprietary Damn Format because it requires an operating system capable of reading PDF files (there are many that can not).

Google has changed all that by not only indexing PDF files, but also by converting them into text files that you may view by clicking on the "view as html" link.

If the page does not contain any data - such as a full graphics page - Google will display a meta description.

Q: [Updates] How often does Google update?
A: Since mid September 2000, it has been the third week of the month. They will update with data spidered the month before. Thus, they are usually 60-90 days stale results.

In 2002, the streak has been broken. Updates have been non-trackable.

You can watch the new index migrate from www2 or www3 to the standard www.google.com.

This process of migration, usually takes 2-4 days and will appear to fluctuate between the three wwwX.google.coms.

Q: [PageRank] How do you know if you are banned?
A: If you can find zero results in a search of your domain, that is a pretty good indication that your domain has been swept out of the index.

You may also use the Google toolbar to check the "pagerank" value of your site.

Another alternative is to look for your listing in the Google version of the Open Directory Project (directory.google.com) for your site (if listed in the ODP). Note the green bar to the left of your listing. If it is blank, there is a chance you may have been banned or penalized.

Lastly, try writing in to google at search-quality@google.com and asking about the specific domains.

Q: [PageRank] How do I check my sites PageRank value?
A: You can use two specific and one general method:

You can use the Google Toolbar for the windows version of Internet Explorer. The page rank value is displayed for each site you visit on the toolbar.
http://toolbar.google.com

If you have a Open Directory Project listing (dmoz.org), you can view the listing in the Google'ized version of the directory. The listing is displayed with a small green bar at the left.

http://directory.google.com

You can determine your pagerank value by looking at ChrisR's bar chart:
http://www.searchnerd.com/pagerank/

Lastly, if your site is not listed in the directory and you can not run the Google toolbar, you can get a rough estimate by simply looking at Google search results. Find the largest keyword that your site is listed under and compare it to other pages that are listed in the Google directory. Google displays a link to the directory if a page has a directory listing. By comparing your page to pages listed above and below you, you can get a very good idea what the PR value.

Q: [Adwords] Why can I not see my AdWords display?
A: Google uses a proprietary ad serving algo. That system may include duplicate protection where a user will not repeatedly see the same advertisement.

The system at one point was based on cookies. Thus, clearing your cookies and restarting your browser, may make the AdWords reappear.

It may also be based on IP tracking. If you have a dialup account with a dynamically assigned IP, logging off and back on may re-enable your view.

This Google ad serving system has been in flux for most of 2002 - your mileage may vary.

It is probably wise to use caution when developing applications intended for Googles API project. There has been no commitment from Google to keep the service free.

Q: [Image] How do I get images to rank in the image search?
A: Carefully thought out filenames and directories. We also assume there is some sort of "context" being used from the page. Alt tags may play a role here.

Take for example the current listings under a image search for the generic term "home". The first result has been from stanford univerisity for most of the last year. That pages and images attributes:

- high page rank (8)
- filname "home.gif"
- alt tag includes "home"

Q: [Yahoo] What does Yahoo do with Google results?
A: On any query, Google produces a set number of results and delivers them to Yahoo. After that, it is entirely up to Yahoo to tweak the algo at their whim. It changes from month-to-month. Sometimes those results will appear to rotate simply because Yahoo isn't digging down into the results as far as Google does. (eg, google displays up to 10k pages, while Yahoo draws from a few k of those. That can make it appear as though there are two databases at work.)

Q: [Yahoo] What is the difference between Google and Yahoo's Google algo?

Q: [Directory] What is the difference between the ODP at Dmoz.org and at Google.com?
A: They are the same database, however Google applies a "relevance" score via its PageRank algo. It will also drop some low ranked sites in popular categories to limit the display.
Last Updated:04/20/2002 - 22:52 added by:Brett_Tabke

Q: [Directory] Does an ODP listing help my Google rankings?
A: In a strict sense, yes. Most all links to your site will help. Additionally, Google does use ODP data as "spider seed". If a site is listed in the ODP then Google will spider it.

In the past, it was assumed that an ODP or Yahoo listing would be counted "more" than links from the rest of the net. This was due to some written materials by Google reps that indicated this was part of the system. That does not appear to be true any longer. A link from the ODP does not boost your PageRank value any more than a link from a comparable website.
Last Updated:04/22/2002 - 21:59 added by:Brett_Tabke

Q: [Directory] Does the category I am listed in on Google matter?
A: Yes. Link context is quite important. Google can determining the theme of a page from its primary keywords. That is quite easily done on the odp - especially when they can download the data to play with.
