Alaska Halibut Fishing

For many fishermen around the world, a successful fishing trip is measured in bites or hookups. In Alaska, halibut fishing success is measured in pounds - sometimes hundreds of pounds! Our crews are experts at Alaska halibut fishing and will teach you how to win the battle with a "barn-door" halibut. Alaskan Halibut are stealthy flat-fish that can quickly test the tackle's strength and the angler's determination. From feeling the first bite, to the pole-bending hookup, and all the way to the gaff, we will guide you every step of the way.

Halibut Fishing 2012

We have heard recently from many clients inquiring about halibut fishing in Alaska, asking if the bag limit has been changed in our area. Fortunately, for 2012 in the Seward area, the halibut bag limit remains 2 fish of any size, per person/day. Biologists are seeing changes in the halibut biomass showing high numbers of small fish which are not maturing as quickly as they should. The average size of sport-caught halibut has been trending down (currently around 20 lbs.) for the last several years reflecting this change. It is possible, if the trend of slower growth rates does not reverse in the near future, sport limits for halibut could be reduced in future seasons to protect the mature breeding biomass.

Seasons for catching salmon in Seward vary by species. The largest run of salmon in the Seward area are Silvers (Coho). The silvers show up in numbers by the first of July and continue to run through the end of August. During this time it's also possible to catch a King (Chinook) Salmon, however our best fishing for Kings takes place during the month of June. In June we often troll for kings as part of our combo trips. We also offer full-day trips specifically to target King Salmon.
