Tokyo sets goal for renewable energy introduction

The Tokyo metropolitan government has released a report on its goal to expand the use of renewable energy.

According to the report, the goal is to increase the ratio of renewable energy-derived electricity to the power consumption in Tokyo to 20% by 2024. To achieve this goal, the committee proposes (1) measures to promote the introduction of renewable energy in and outside Tokyo and make utility customers use renewable energy-derived electricity for the supply side and (2) the promotion of energy saving, the use of solar heat/geothermal heat and the introduction of EMSes (energy management systems) and co-generation systems for the demand side.

As a specific goal, the committee which released the report aims to introduce 1,000,000kW (1GW) of solar power generation facilities in Tokyo by 2024. Also, to take an initiative, it set a goal of introducing 22MW of solar power generation systems to facilities owned by the government by 2020.

As measures to promote the introduction of solar power generation facilities in Tokyo, the committee cited (1) the installation of solar systems at existing houses as renovations, (2) local help from districts, cities, towns and villages, (3) collaboration with local contractors and business operators and (4) model businesses of installing solar systems in parking lots.

For the introduction of solar power generation facilities outside Tokyo, the committee plans to form the “Public-private Renewable Energy Fund” in February 2015 to spread the use of solar/wind power generation facilities in the service areas of Tokyo Electric Power Co Inc (TEPCO) and Tohoku Electric Power Co Inc. JAG Energy Co Ltd and Sparx Asset Management Co Ltd were selected as business operators.

In addition, the committee will request the Japanese government to build/strengthen power grid facilities for the introduction of the maximum amount of renewable energy and to steadily realize the integrated operation of power grids by using inter-region power lines such as those between the the service areas of TEPCO and Tohoku Electric.

In other countries, the governments of Munich City, Germany, and Copenhagen City, Denmark, aim to meet the power demand in the cities only with renewable energy-derived electricity and have been actively investing in wind power plants outside the cities, etc.

Little by little we will learn sustainability or die.

in that case, how come they dont reintroduce subsidies ? its measly 20000Y per kw now and not country and neither Tokyo government provide any , Installation price for house solar is ridiculously high in Tokyo , which makes no sense since cheap panels are readily available in China... these days a minimal system would cost you over 16thousand usd

A mere 20% after TEN years?? Are they serious? Let them choose a district in Tokyo and equip it with a high density of subsidized solar electricity generating houses/buildings to show they ARE serious about this. NOW. The technology is there. The political will is not. A report about goals to be realized in 10 years lacks credibility. Who will be the governor then?
