Professor Dr. Roongroj Bhidayasiri, Professor of Neurology at Chulalongkorn Centre of Excellence for Parkinson’s Disease & Related Disorders, and Dr. Onanong Jitkritsadakul, Neurologist at Chulalongkorn Centre of Excellence for Parkinson’s Disease & Related Disorders have developed gloves to reduce tremors characteristically found with Parkinson’s disease.
The slow, rhythmic tremors commonly experienced by patients with Parkinson’s disease are not debilitating. However, these involuntary shaking during rest can be annoying and attract attention, making Parkinson’s patients lose self-confidence.
The Parkinson’s gloves is a battery-powered medical device designed to reduce the resting tremors using low-frequency electric currents to stimulate the hand muscles. The gloves can also collect data of the tremors and connects via Bluetooth to mobile phones. An added plus is that the gloves are easy–to–use and portable.
The Parkinson’s gloves has been awarded the Best Abstract by a Woman in Movement Disorders from the International Association of Parkinsonism and Related Disorders. The gloves are now ready for public launch, having received a Technology Readiness Level 8 and a national patent.
For more information about the gloves, contact Professor Dr. Roongroj at Sor Tor Building, Floor 7, Chulalongkorn Centre of Excellence for Parkinson’s Disease & Related Disorders, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, call 0 2256 4000 ext. 70707, email: bh@chulapd.org or visit www.chulapd.org.
