Watch Wolf - Kathryn Lasky - Wolves of the Beyond 3

Watch Wolf
Wolves of the Beyond
Book 3

Kathryn Lasky
Scholastic
ISBN 9780545093149
eISBN 9780545388726

This book continues directly upon book three Shadow Wolf. Folan and Edme have first been sent on a quest. They must go to the place of their tummfraw, their abandonment before they became gnaw wolves. But shortly after their arrival at the ring of fire and start their training, things seem off.

Kathryn Lasky is an amazing storyteller. The Hoolian world that she has created that is shared by the owls, wolves and bears of the beyond, has captured the imagination of people around the world. In this book, one of the wolf clans wants to start a war believing that they will come out and rule all of the beyond. The great thing about this book is that the primary focus shifts from Folan to a number of key characters, including strong female characters who learn to believe in themselves.

These stories are great with wonderful characters and stories that teach good lessons. They are fun to read and children of all ages will love them.

The Siege
Guardians of Ga'Hoole Book 4

Kathryn Lasky
Scholastic
ISBN 9780545283359

eISBN 9780439405607

There are 15 books in this series, two supplemental books and now 4 in a spin- off series. And yet with each book that I read, I find that I have a greater appreciation for Kathryn Lasky's writing; her skill as a storyteller is masterful. The stories draw the reader in, and for most they will want to read the next tale as soon as they finish one. The characters are strong and powerful and as you visit the land of Ga'Hoole and beyond you will fall in love with the creatures and their fight for what is right and what is just! The stories move at an amazing pace and with each one you have a deeper appreciation for the relationships at the Great Tree and across the realms.

In this story the Great tree and the Ga'Hoolian way of life is under threat. Metal Beak and his band have put the Island under Siege. Soren and his friends are each doing what they can to help with the preparations for battle and a plan for how to save the tree and all that it symbolizes for the Owls of Ga'Hoole and to all the owl kingdoms. This story has more direct conflict and battle than any of the previous books, and a reader cannot but suspect that the pace of the series is picking up.

This is another amazing book in an incredible series by a spectacular author. Give the series a try you will not be disappointed.

The Rescue
Guardians of Ga'Hoole Book 3

Kathryn Lasky
Scholastic
ISBN 9780439405591

eISBN 9780545283342

With every book I read, I become a bigger fan of Kathryn Lasky and/or Ga'Hoole. Even though the movie is so different, it was my first introduction to Ga'Hoole and the Legends of the Great Tree and the Guardians who reside there. The books had been on my to-read list for a long time, but because they were older, had constantly been pushed down the reading list. But now I am completely hooked and look forward to each new adventure as I finish the previous book.

In this third installment we return to Soren, a Tyto, barn own, and his band of friends who go on a rescue mission searching out their beloved teacher Ezylryb. Ezylryb had gone missing while searching for information about a new villain on the horizon, Metal Beak. The history and legends of Ga'Hoole is a long and intricate tale. They are stories what will challenge your spirit and make you think you can be better than you currently are. They are stories as truth that will help you see the world in a new way. Lasky is a master story teller and these books are masterpieces each unto themselves and as a greater whole. So come join Soren, Gylfie, Digger, Twilight and Otulissa as they embark on yet another heroic adventure.

Shadow Wolf - Kathryn Lasky - Wolves of the Beyond 2

Shadow Wolf
Wolves of the Beyond
Book 2

Kathryn Lasky
Scholastic
ISBN 9780545093125

Kathryn Lasky, in the forward wrote: "I have always thought that writing is not a solitary performance, but a collaborative - one between an author and the past-what she has read, listened to, and absorbed. The shoulders of giants are not just reserved for scientists as Newton suggested, but writers and artists perch there as well. If I have overlooked in my acknowledgments any giants, I apologize." She might be standing on the shoulders of giants but I am sure generations to come will consider her a giant that they stand upon. This second book in the Wolves of the Beyond series is incredible. I literally could not put it down. I have been alternately reading this series and the Guardians of Ga'Hoole books at the same time. Both are amazing series set in the same world. According to Lasky there will not likely be more books in the Hoolian series, but there is a fourth announced for the Wolves and hopefully we will get many more tales of the Wolves to read.

This book continues the story of Faolan. He has joined one of the packs as a Gnaw wolf. Faolan has a great heart and the other wolves know there is something special and different about him. Some respect and appreciate that. Most are superstitious and fear him to some extent. Faolan, not being raised in the pack, also seems to keep making mistakes. But now Faolan has an opportunity, for the Watch Wolves need a new member and a competition is underway, a gaddergnaw, to determine the best known wolves from the clan. But Faolan has an enemy and one who is determined to destroy him.

The characters are amazing, and the story wonderful. While reading this book, I kept finding myself reading after I should have put the book down, not wanting to come back from lunch, or go to bed, in order to find out what would happen next. It is an incredible book by an amazing author.

This second book in the Guardians of Ga'Hoole was just as good as the first. Continuing directly from the first, it is the story of our band of owls' journey from the Desert of Kuneer through the Beeks and on to the great Ga'Hoole tree on the island of Hoole. Once they arrive at the great tree, it is even more than the expected. All the legends or myths they had heard as young owls are true. The four friends live together in the same hollow but they are tapped(selected) to train for different specializations. This second installment moves at an even faster pace than the first volume. The story races along as the band of owls adapt to life in the tree and as they train and aspire to become Guardians. I know there are 15 books in the main story and two spin-off books now. But if they are all as good as the first two, I have a lot of great reading ahead of me.
