eISBN 9781784692636
ASIN B072LR5JTP
CTS Booklet B749

Over the last few years I have read 2 other books about Pier Giorgio, I have one on my wish list, and I have listed to an excellent audio presentation by Fr. Tim Deeter. I was fascinated by this saint from my first encounter. Also, over the last few years I have read over 100 books and booklets from the Catholic Truth Society. I have read many in the CTS Biographies and also Saints of the Isles Series, and the Great Saints Series. I have read a few different volumes by  Glynn MacNiven-Johnston, across a number of series. I decided it was time to give this one a read. And it did not disappoint. Even having read and listened to other resources about this man, reading this little volume was of great benefit. This book was first published in 2012 and the eBook was released in 2017. The description of the book is:

“A young man who spent his short life caring for the sick and infirm. A handsome and active young man from an influential family in Turin who dedicated his short life to the care of the poor and the sick and working for social and political reforms. Pier Giorgio Frassati's generosity was legendary. He often gave the clothes he was wearing to poor people he met who were in need. An open anti-fascist, a keen sportsman and mountaineer, an enthusiast of the theatre and literature, and a young man with a great devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, he stands as a great example of Christianity in action. His life was cut short by polio at the age of 24 and thousands of the Italian industrial city's poor lined the streets at his funeral. He was beatified in 1990 by Blessed Pope John Paul II.”

And the chapters are:
Introduction
Family Background
Schooldays and Faith
Love of Neighbour
Disdain for Pomp and Possessions
Climbing and other sports
Love and Sacrifice
Politics and Social Justice
Death and Recognition
The Cause of Pier Giorgio Frassati
Prayers
Beatification Homily of Bl. Pope John Paul II
Further Reading and Information

The beginning of the Introduction states:

“In 2008, World Youth Day was held in Sydney, Australia, and hundreds of thousands of young people came from all over the world to participate. Among them was Pier Giorgio Frassati, an Italian from Turin. Unlike the others, though, he came in a one hundred and fifty kilogram zinc-lined coffin. He had died in 1925 at the age of twenty-four but the Australian Catholic Church held him in such high esteem as a patron of youth that they asked for him to be brought to Australia. The sealed casket remained in St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney for the time of the meetings (since World Youth Day actually lasts about a week) and many liturgies were built round his life and example.”

This was one of the facts I had not encountered about his life. Before. I was also unaware haw hard his home life was. I knew his father was hard on him, and his parent’s marriage was strained. But this booklet is very clear on his life and circumstances. But Pier rose above them. He lived a life of virtue, a love of service. This volume is a great introduction to this man’s life and ministry. And for those with a devotion to him, there will likely be a few things you were unaware of, or that you will see in a new light. We are told:

“Pier Giorgio loved the mountains, saying that the higher you went, the more clearly you could hear Christ’s voice. Once the group reached the top they would have a ski race down.”

And Pier in responding to his sister stated:

“Any Catholic can’t help but be happy ... Pain is not sadness which is a disease worse than any other ... so long as faith gives me strength I will always be joyful.”

Anyone who reads the story of this man will be blessed. The two prayers in that chapter are one for his canonisation and the other is a wonderful litany. It is an excellent read.

Another great biography from the Catholic Truth Society. An excellent read, I highly recommend it.

Prayer to Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati

Prayer to Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati

Blessed Pier Giorgio, you taught me how to lead
an unselfish life and to keep those who suffer
close to my heart. You had good times with your
friends and you really enjoyed sports. But you
always kept God and love and kindness to others
as your highest priorities.

Help me when I try to imitate you and I
Stumble. Help me when I lose my grip in trying
to climb always closer to God.

I want to be an apostle of Jesus just like you.
Amen.

This past year I read two books about Pier Giorgio, both were excellent reads and inspired me. This Prayer comes from this book in the Encounter the Saints Series:

Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati
Journey to the Summit
Encounter the Saints Series Book 18
Susan Helen Wallace

The Other was this one:

Blessed Pier Giorgio FrassatiAn Ordinary Christian

I highly recommend both books and praying this prayer!

This was the second book about Pier Giorgio Frassati that I have read this year. The other was Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati: An Ordinary Christian by Maria Amata Di Lorenzo. Both are excellent reads but there were a few stories in this book written for children that really inspired me and my son. My family and I love this series. And the example of Pier Giorgio is an incredible story of faith and service. And his live serves as an example to us all.

As a family we loved this series and this specific book. The Encounter the Saints Series, from Pauline Books and Media, and consider them excellent reads. The series is written for younger readers, but they are so well written it can be appreciated by anyone who wants to grow in knowledge of a specific saint or learn from the examples of the 37 saints in the series to date. I really enjoy reading these books with my children, but need to be upfront and say I am well ahead of them in working my way through the series because I just cannot put them down. But now onto specifics about this book and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati.

The chapters in this book about Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati are:
1. An Easter Gift
2. Lessons in Love
3. Facing the Music
4. A Happy Surprise
5. Growing Pains
6. A Difference of Opinion
7. Challenges
8. The Making of a Saint
9. Years of Turmoil
10. A New Road
11. Friend for All
12. A Strange Land
13. Home Again
14. Journey of Prayer
15. A Step Closer
16. High Spirits
17. Home Invasion
18. Laura
19. In the Mountains
20. The Sacrifice
21. The Happiest Day
22. Holiness Revealed

Glossary

My children loved how much this man gave and served. While reading the book they talked about other ways they could help and give. We loved his involvement with Catholic youth organizations. We also like the smaller group within a group 'The Shady Characters' not only were them members of the Federation of Italian Catholic Students, they were also mountain climbers and loved spending time outdoors together. The Prayer to Blessed Pier Giorgio in this book is:

Blessed Pier Giorgio, you taught me how to lead
an unselfish life and to keep those who suffer
close to my heart. You had good times with your
friends and you really enjoyed sports. But you
always kept God and love and kindness to others
as your highest priorities.

Amen.

This is the only book in the series illustrated by Don Stewart. But the simple sketches really add to the story. It is also the only offering by Ana Maria Vasquez and Jennings Dean in the series.

This book was very inspiring. I am hoping to read more about this saint and loved this volume. There are currently 37 books in this series, including The Saints Pray for Us. I have read a number of these books on my own and also about half of them with my children.  My oldest who is 11 can read them to us. She has read them to me and also helped me read them to the younger children. My son who is 9 can read them with some help on the more difficult words, but he really enjoys just listening to these powerful stories. My youngest who is 6 loved the story, and while reading this one held her pink play sword. This book is part of the Encounter the Saints Series; from Pauline Books and Media, and this book is an incredible read as is the entire series!  Our family gives them five stars.

Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati: An Ordinary Christian - Maria Amata Di Lorenzo & Robert A. Ventresca

Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati
An Ordinary Christian
Maria Amata Di Lorenzo
Robert Ventresca (Translator)
Pauline Books and Media
ISBN 9780819811622

I have head the name Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati many times, but until recently never really looked into his life. It is a name I came across in courses in school in passing. Or seen author authors and bloggers mention briefly. But after reading this book I know that I will be spending some more time looking at this man’s incredible life. For Pier Giorgio did more living and more serving in his 24 years of life than many of us who have much longer time on earth. He was born in April of 1901 and he died in 1925 on July 25th.

This book is very well written and also well translated. For sometimes when you read something in translation it feels like a bit is lost or that something is a little off. That is not the case with this volume. To be honest this book was so good that even while I was reading it I was looking up both the author and translator to see what other works that had available.

What an incredible story this is, it is about a Man with a heart for God, a man with a heart for service. And man who strove to be his best and bring out the best in others. Pier Giorgio lived a life of dedicated service, thorough his works of social action, his charity, his personal prayer and communal prayer life. He was involved with many activities including the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Catholic youth groups and catholic student groups. He was a Third Order Dominican. And he was involved with and helped establish a Catholic Newspaper called Momento.

This book does an amazing job of chronicling the life of this incredible young man. It follows his journey of faith. And also his physical travels back and forth to Germany a few times. It highlights the insight he had into the need for social justice, and his though was on the cutting edge of that theology.

But most of all this is a book about example. The example of speaking out when we see a wrong. An example of serving when and where we can. The example of making sacrifices and living completely for Jesus Christ. And above all doing so with faithful submission to the Church authority. But it is also an example of staying healthy in body, spirit and mind. For Blessed Pier Giorgio He loved being in the outdoors and climbing mountains.

I was amazing in reading this book about how much Frassati accomplished in his lifetime, and because of this story I am inspired to increase my efforts. This is an incredible read about man who loved God and served others, it serves as an example for us today. Very well written and translated and I highly recommend this book!
