The Wyrm King - Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi - Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles Book 3

The Wyrm King
Beyond The Spiderwick Chronicles
Book 3

Holly Black and

Tony DiTerlizzi
Simon and Schuster
ISBN 9780689871337

I finished this book with a sense of the bitter sweet. Sweet because it was the conclusion to a great trilogy. But bitter because it hints that there will be no more books in the Spiderwick world. It is the last book in the Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles trilogy, and the last of 11 books set in the Spiderwick world. What I loved about the afterward by Black and DiTerlizzi was that they encourage others to tell more tales of the fantastical, and we should start seeing books written in homage to these books, exploring and expanding upon the magical, mythological and adventuresome nature of these books.

At the end of the last book there was a forewarning that the Giants had a purpose. Now, it seems very obvious what that purpose was. Huge sink holes are spreading all over the Florida coastline, and most people are assuming it is a new natural disaster. But both the Vargas and Grace children are racing time to try to save Florida and possibly all of North America from a new threat from the fairy world. This story has great adventure, some mishaps and a few surprising twists. It is a great conclusion to an amazing series of books.

Just when I thought this series could not get any better, man does it ever. The Vargas kids are back in a mess with fantastical creatures. The Giants, as predicted, are indeed waking up and as they fight for territory they are leaving a swath of destruction behind them. Jarod and Laurie are not on their own this time; Laurie tricked their older brother into carrying around a 4 leaf clover, and now he can see
the creatures also. But they don't believe the adults will believe them, and they need to find a solution to the Giant Problem or all of Florida will burn.

I have now read 10 books that are part of the Spiderwick universe by Black and DiTerlizzi and think they are great. I cannot wait for my children to be older so I can share these adventures with them. And I approach the last book with some trepidation.

I loved the original 5 books in the Spiderwick Chronicles. I also really enjoyed the 3 supplemental books and manuals by Black and DiTerlizzi, so to say I was looking forward to the Beyond Spiderwick trilogy would be to put it very lightly. I loved this first book in the trilogy. I really like the main characters, step- brother and sister, Nick and Laurie Vargas. This story, set in the Florida marshland, is a whole new approach to the fantastical world around us.
Both Nick and Laurie are fairly unhappy with their lot in life. Nick's mother was sick, has passed away and now his dad has remarried. Laurie's dad is half way across the country. And now they are living in a blended home. Nick's dad is the developer building Mangrove Hollow, 'A Community Set In Nature'. But soon life becomes very complicated for them. Nick discovers a four leaf clover and then a creature from one of Laurie's books. They save it, but end up in trouble in the process, and soon their lives and troubles are bigger than they would have ever imagined.

The main characters are the greatest strength of this story. They are ordinary kids, with family problems, who are thrown into a world of supernatural creatures and problems to solve they could never have imagined. I loved the book and cannot wait to read book 2, A Giant Problem, to find out what will happen to them next!

This was the first book in the Spiderwick world I was disappointed with. I bought the eBook and cannot figure out why the publisher released an e-version of this book. It is intended to be a workbook. There are 14 chapters in this book, alphabetically named after the creatures encountered.

The sections are:
Brownies
Dragons
Dwarves
Elves
Goblins
Griffins
Hobgoblins
Knockers
Ogres
Phookas
Sprites
Stray Sod
Trolls
Unicorns

Each section has a story written by someone who has had an encounter with the Fantastical, followed by a short commentary by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi. Then there are numerous activities to be completed. These includes writing your own encounters, making lists, drawing pictures and much much more. This workbook will be great fun for a child and provide entertainment again and again as they go back and add more notes to each section. But the eBook cannot even be printed out to allow these activities to be completed. If you're going to buy this book make sure you get the physical book. It will be entertaining and fun for children of all ages.

I love these two authors! They are brilliant. This was an amazing series and I have already got the 3 addendum books and the second series Beyond Spiderwick to read. Part of me was sad to see this series come to an end. I like the characters and the world that Black and DiTerlizzi have created. It is a world I would like to live in, or at least have the opportunity to visit. At the end of this book it states it is the end of the story of the Grace Children, but because there are more books we know that the adventure in this world has not come to an end, it is just changing chapters. Much like what happens to each of the children in the Narnia Chronicles at different points in time.

This story has more action then the first 4 and races along to a conclusion. In this story we discover that Dragons really exist, that Vanity can really lead to anyone's or anything's downfall and we find out that the Fairy folk are more fair and compassionate then when we last encountered them. It is a great book in an amazing world!

The further I get into this series, the more I like it. These are great books, wonderfully written and illustrated. Black and DiTerlizzi have done an amazing job. These books in some ways are like C.S. Lewis's Narnia books, and in other ways like J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, but they are not overtly religious the way Lewis's are and they are not as dark as Tolkien's. They will introduce children to the concept of wonder, and believing in things unseen, or at least unseen by most. As the series progresses, the relationship between the three Grace children solidifies. They grow closer together as they struggle against those forces that wish to take Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide, and they grow in character through the trials they encounter.
What is great is that as each book progresses, the story moves faster and faster. In this book they encounter goblins again, and dwarves and an ogre. They soon realize that the world of fairy is far more dangerous than they had experienced so far. In this book we have riddles, a kidnapping, capture and an escape. We encounter mechanical animals and a few hidden surprises even the children could not expect. It is a great novel and leaves you wanting the 5th and final book of the first series.

I must admit I am addicted to these books, read three of them in 2 days and will more than likely reread the whole series again and again. Some books are like a bottle of Gatorade that you just chug back, some like a nice cup of tea that you sip, and some like a fine wine that you savour slowly. Right now I am drinking these books back because I need to know what happens next. But I know I will go back and drink them in slowly like a big mug of Irish Breakfast tea on my second reading. Black and DiTerlizzi have written a wonderful series that I can highly recommend. Their books are very enjoyable, and much like the Narnia books by C.S. Lewis, will be enjoyed by both the young and young at heart!
In this book the Grace children, Malory, and the twins Jared and Simon, visit their Great Aunt Lucinda and discover that even though she is committed she is not really crazy. In this book we also meet more creatures from the other world, and find out that many different beings want Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide, and they all seem malevolent to some extent. We also discover that something lost for more than 70 years might really be close at hand. And Thimbletack does not appear, but signs of his mischief abound. In this book we meet a unicorn, fairies, and elves. It is another wonderful book in an awesome series.

After finishing book one in this series, I could not stop, picked up book 2 and read it in one quick sitting. The story picks up just after volume one. Malory, Jared and Simon Grace are back at it again. The children soon learn that there is a price to pay for learning about creatures that usually stay hidden, with a mix of kidnapping, a cooked cat, briar patch cages, a wounded griffin, a pack of goblins and a troll. The story packs a lot in a small space.
Once you start reading the books you will not want to stop. Make sure you have at least the five from the first series. Both Black and DiTerlizzi do an amazing job again on this book. So as soon as you finish it you will be desperate to pick up book 3, Lucinda's Secret. The writing is excellent and the illustrations are awesome. This book is a great read and will leave you itching for the next book in the series.

I am a big fan of both Black and DiTerlizzi, but I had not gotten around to going back and reading these books. I must admit after reading this first one, I will be devouring the rest of this series and the three books in the Beyond Spiderwick series. I have seen and enjoyed the movie but so long ago it did not affect my reading of the book. I had big expectations for this book and it did not disappoint.
The five books in this series can really be taken as one continuous story. Yet they were originally published individually. They are available in a boxed set and a single volume omnibus edition. But no matter how you read them you will be enchanted by the world presented by Black and DiTerlizzi.

The story follows 3 children, Jarod, Simon, and Mallory as they move into a relative's home. Soon they discover the house has secrets, from a dumb waiter, to a hidden library, and even residents that the children previously would not have believed existed. This first instalment into their story is fun and rambunctious as children are often wont to be. It is the beginning of what looks to be an awesome series.
