More Combat Training
The Army is instituting significant changes in how it trains Soldiers, aiming to make them more battle ready. Among the changes, all Soldiers will participate in a live-fire convoy exercise; units will be provided with squad-designated marksmen, who will train an extra two weeks before being assigned to their unit.
PLDC Changes to Warrior Leader Course
The Army has announced that its Primary Leadership Development Course will be renamed the Warrior Leader Course, beginning Oct. 15 (2005), and officials said the new name reflects changes made to PLDC curriculum over the past year.
eArmyU Expanded
Changes in re-enlistment criteria effective Oct. 1 (2005) broaden eligibility for Soldiers to participate in the eArmU laptop enrollment option, officials said, and extend the program’s no-laptop option to all officers.
Training to Deploy
Soldiers head into Iraq open-eyed. Suicide bombings, skirmishes, riots, cultural clashes — reacting to such things is nearly second nature after weeks of wargaming at the National Training Center, at Fort Irwin, CA, the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, LA, or the Combat Manuever Training Center in Hohenfels, Germany.
Sniper School
According to the U.S. Army, the average soldier will hit a man-sized target 10 percent of the time at 300 meters using the M16A2 rifle. Graduates of the U.S. Army sniper school are expected to achieve 90 percent first-round hits at 600 meters, using the M24 Sniper Weapon System (SWS).

Ranger School for Non-Combat Jobs
A new initiative has opened up Ranger School to a broader range of Soldiers. Before this change, Ranger School was limited to combat arms soldiers and those who were assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment or Ranger Training Brigade. Now Ranger School is open to Combat Support and Combat Service Support soldiers for whom the combat exclusion policy does not apply (i.e., males only).
Re-Training Opportunities
The Army publishes an "In" and "Out" call-listing which lists Army MOSs (jobs) for each rank where soldiers can re-train out of, or re-train into. This listing can also be used as a "snap-shot" for which MOSs in each specific rank is "overmanned," "undermanned," or "balanced."
eArmyU Expands Free Laptop Eligibility
Eligibility for the Army Continuing Education System’s eArmyU program’s laptop option has expanded to include most active-duty specialists through staff sergeants who re-enlist. Effective Feb. 1 (2005), eligible E4, E5 and E6 Soldiers who re-enlist may participate in the laptop option if they meet eligibility requirements. The program is no longer limited to Soldiers who re-enlist for combat forces/operational units.
MP School
They maintain order, but try to forgo force. One day they’reinvestigating a crime. The next they’re providing area security in a combat zone. Military police have the choice of two occupational specialties: basic combat support MP and corrections specialist. Training for each specialty lasts nine weeks, much of it at Fort Leonard Wood.
Drill Sergeant School

BEAR Program
The Bonus Extension and Retraining (BEAR) Program is designed to assist in force alignment. It allows eligible soldiers an opportunity to extend their enlistment for formal retraining into a shortage MOS (job) that is presently in the Selective Reenlistment Bonus (SRB) Program and, upon completion of retraining, receive a SRB in the newly awarded PMOS.
College First Enlistment Program
The Army offers a unique enlistment incentive called "Army College First," that allows college students to enlist in the Army in the Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP), continue with their college education, receive a monthly stipend from the Army, then enter the Army at an advanced rank.

The Joint Fires and Effects Training System debuted at Fort Sill Sept. 8, with visiting dignitaries and post officials attending the premier of the new, high-tech training system that incorporates real-time, photo-realistic graphics, surround sound and artificial intelligence. Jump School
When you think about the term 'paratroopers,' you probably think about the U.S. Army. And, the Army does have more paratroopers than any of the other services. However, all of the services have troops who are trained to jump out of perfectly good aircraft, and all of those troops go through the same training at the Army's Airborne School.

The Funded Legal Education Program (FLEP) allows up to 15 active duty Army Officers per year the opportunity to attend law school, cost-free.
Marksmanship Simulator
A new computer-generated training system called the EST 2000 will replace the Weaponeer, a marksmanship training aid that has been in commission for more than 30 years. In a recent test, nearly all the Soldiers showed excellent improvements within minutes of training with the new EST 2000.
Mountaineering Training
The two-week course consists of lessons in mountain land navigation, fixed rope rappelling and belaying, top rope climbing, knot tying, rope management, and movement over snow and ice. The students must successfully complete two written tests – one on land navigation and a comprehensive final exam – as well as pass mountain stakes, the hands-on test, to graduate the course.
Mountain Warefare School

National Guard (Army) Sniper School
The National Guard Sniper School, established in 1993 at Camp Joseph T. Robinson, has come of age in one important way. The U.S. Army accredited it last December. It will soon get the chance to train active Army soldiers in the deadly art and science of deliberately stalking and killing the enemy without remorse and from distances that are hard to fathom.
