The Tech
About this server

This is a server for current and back issues of The Tech. The articles provided may be freely distributed electronically, if they are distributed in their entirety and include the copyright notice, but may not be reprinted without the express written permission of The Tech. Write to archive@the-tech.mit.edu for additional details.

The archive currently contains all of our issues from 1992 to the present, along with many issues from 1990 through 1992. We are working on providing copies of all our issues from 1985 to the present.

Be sure to check our "What's new" page for the latest developments.

There are some formatting errors that have crept into our stories as a result of converting them from their original representation into HTML. Many of the older stories hail from our Atex editorial system and the conversion software has many rough edges; it was written in about an hour!

The more recent issues were converted from QuarkXPress source using software written at The Tech. The software we use to prepare issues is tuned pretty specifically to The Tech, but you are welcome to take a look at it. On the other hand, we have extracted the Quark-to-HTML conversion and made it a stand-alone software package.

We are beginning to provide photographs from our issues, and we have many scans of the comic strip Firehose Tavern. Our progress in scanning photos has been slow because we do not digitize all of our photos as part of the normal production process.

We also provide server statistics generated by Wstats.

Here are the gory technical details: We run Apache HTTP Server 1.1 on a SPARCclassic running Solaris 2.4; the Sparc has 48 MB of RAM. Archive searching uses a recent version of glimpse with a Perl front-end that translates search results into headlines.

We are eager to hear your comments about our server. Please send mail to archive@the-tech.mit.edu, or use our comment page.
