The Prince George's County Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency in the County. In accordance with the Prince George's County Code (Section 18-135), the goals of the Department are to contribute to a high quality of life by maintaining a peaceful and orderly community, by protecting the lives and property of its citizens, by reducing the opportunity for individuals to commit criminals acts, and by efficiently and effectively investigating and apprehending persons suspected of committing criminal acts.

The Chief of Police is the commanding officer of the Department, appointed by the County Executive and confirmed by the County Council. The Chief is responsible for planning, directing organizing, coordinating, training, and staffing all activities of the Department. The Police Chief also coordinates relations with citizens, County agencies, and other local, State, and Federal agencies.
