Stratford Bus Station Wins Award by Design
6 September 1996

London Transport’s Bus Station in Stratford, East London, will be awarded a 1996 Civic Trust Design Award for raising awareness and standards through design.

London Transport Buses will be presented with the award and plaque for the station by representatives from the Civic Trust at West Ham Town Hall at 1500 on Tuesday, 10 September, at a ceremony hosted by Councillor Shama Ahmed, Mayor of Newham.

The eye-catching £2 million structure was completed at the end of 1994. Designed in-house, the brain-child of Architect Soji Abass is only one aspect of the redevelopment partnership involving London Transport, City Challenge and the London Borough of Newham.

Adjacent to Stratford Underground, mainline and Docklands Light Railway station, the brightly lit bus station provides a safe and comfortable environment for passengers. It combines facilities, including a restaurant and kiosks, with accessibility to the Town Centre via a pedestrian walkway.

The Civic Trust is an independent charity whose chief aim is to improve the environment. Achieved by several methods, the Trust encourages high standards through a network of awards, commendations and special mentions. Stratford Bus Station was awarded the highest local category.

Richard Smith, Market Development Director of London Transport Buses said: "Stratford is now seeing a transformation of development and regeneration. As part of the improved transport links, London Transport Buses has put Stratford back on the map. The bus station is a striking structure and the award recognises the enthusiasm and hard work of everyone involved in the project."
