Outside of Old BankThe Bank of Elk River is an independently owned community bank that was chartered in 1885. It is the oldest bank in Sherburne County having survived two fires, the depression, panics, scares, recessions, and an armed robbery in 1953.

W. L. Babcock, W. H. Houlton and Henry Castle formed a partnership and with $10,000.00 of capital, started the bank in 1885. A few years later, the partnership was dissolved and its holdings were divided. W. L. Babcock received control of the bank and the Babcock family has kept a controlling interest in the Bank of Elk River ever since. Edmund P. Babcock, the great-grandson of founder W. L. Babcock, is the current chairman of the board and the majority stockholder.
