This program allows a Macintosh to recognize MSDOS diskettes in an Apple 3.5" superdrive. Note: "AccessPC" does not permit MSDOS programs to be run on a Macintosh computer. "AccessPC" permits MSDOS and MAC data files to be read into software such as "Microsoft Word" which supports both formats. It can be used with software such as "MacLINK" to convert double density data files from MAC to MSDOS or MSDOS to MAC directly on a single Macintosh computer with a Superdrive. The package is a very useful for any environment which uses both MSDOS and Macintosh computers. Data must be stored on a 3.5" floppy diskette in 800 K format on a Mac or 720 K format in MSDOS. AccessPC permits MSDOS files to be saved on a Macintosh hard drive. Users must purchase third party translation utilities to effectively convert complex word processing or spread sheet files with all formatting intact. Move to top of index

The program offers complete flexibility in design in desktop publishing. It allows columns of varying widths; prints type as large as 127 points, imports text typed on a word processor which can be edited on PageMaker's built-in text editor lets user set up style sheets to pre-define every part of a document imports illustrations or graphics directly into pages which can be cropped or scaled to fit provides automatic left-right page orientation and flow of text from page to page and produces near-typeset-quality pages when printed on a laser printer. This is an industry standard, desktop publishing program. Text and graphics can be imported in various formats from a variety of word processing and paint programs. This program allows students to create multimedia animation, including interactive stories, animated school projects, interactive games, movies and cartoons. It requires QuickTime, 6MB of RAM and a Classic II or better. This program enhances and motivates the writing process. There is a level for elementary and intermediate students. The elementary level is easy to use and less confusing for the younger age group. The 2nd level involves a few more options that would be of interest for more effects. However, the range of choices is limiting to older students and a tutorial would be helpful in some areas. Move to top of index

This six program series examines the conics; considers them on a Cartesian Plane; and provides simple transformations to move them from standard positions to other positions on the plane. Methods of construction are also introduced. The last program discusses and illustrates basic applications of conics. This is a videodisc version of video tapes which are available from the Education Media Library. Each videodisc is supplied with barcoded index and frame numbers to easily skip to and display an individual frame. Move to top of index

Concepts in Mathematics: Trigonometric Functions 1 - Solving Triangles

This six part program defines these functions using the lengths of the sides of a right angled triangle, and using relationships on a coordinate plane. Using a calculator, or tables, the measures of the angles or lengths of the sides of the triangle are calculated. Two special relationships, the Sine Law and the Cosine Law, are developed, and practical applications related to solving triangles are presented. A futuristic police chase, plotting a ship's course, and pulling a stalled car are among the story lines that this series uses to investigate vectors. The definition of a vector is developed, vectors at right angles to each other are added, and through the Pythagorean theorem and tangent ratio, the magnitude and direction of the resultant are found. This is a writing and desktop publishing program which contains tools and ideas to enable students to create stories, newsletters, banners and more. It contains illustrations, clip art and over 40 creative projects. A spell checker and thesaurus are also available. You can also purchase this program bundled with "Fine Artist." This flexible program is very encouraging and contains an easy to use yet powerful writing tool. It contains excellent on-line help, good cartoon-like graphics and music. It makes good use of hyper-links. The neat tools and powerful features of the program should keep students coming back to do creative writing. On the other hand, they may end up playing too much with the tools. Move to top of index

This is a utility for mathematical modeling. It constructs a function that will approximate a set of data points gathered from real world observations or experiments. It also enables the student to plot data pairs on a scatter plot and fit a line or curve to the plotted points. The program can fit a median-median, a least squares and residual plot from included files or data entered by the user. This program contains six games which involve shapes, patterns, number and quantity, ordering by attributes, following instructions, measurement, counting and simple addition and subtraction. This easy to use program contains good directions and positive feedback. It contains excellent graphics and sound although occasionally out of sync with mouth movements. This program could be motivating and has been successful with down syndrome students. However the Mac version has a bug in the fishbowl exercise which locks up the program. Move to top of index

The program is relevant to the senior high industrial arts program especially the graphic communication, electricity/electronics and the construction and communication technology courses. It is an excellent introduction to any CAD instruction. It also uses similar commands and operates in a similar fashion as more sophisticated "AutoCAD." The program is conveniently designed and the graphics are appropriate to the topic at hand. The programs drawing screen features useful items such as a Menu Bar, Large Full-Screen Crossbars and a Prompt Line. Dialog Boxes are also a valuable feature of the program. An exceptional feature of the program is the dimensioning capability which is simple, fast and effective. Move to top of index

This is a security system for individual hard disk drives on a Macintosh computer. It provides the capability to protect folders, documents, hard disks or applications against unauthorized access and the risk of accidental deletion. Folders can be marked as write protected permitting users to access files but not change their contents or the arrangement of the desk top. This program provides a similar level of control to users of individual hard disk drives as has been possible on network file servers. It is an advantage in a classroom to prevent accidental erasures of essential files or confusing the arrangement of files on the desk top. Move to top of index

The program provides for problem solving and learning scientific information relating to natural resources and the types of rock in which they are found. It involves searching out data, comparing information and writing reports relative to physical geography. The software is limited in scope as it contains major areas of mineral deposits only. Students are challenged with running a simulated small business. The program provides an environment where students practice critical math, problem-solving and communication skills. Students take on the role of a vendor and are responsible for keeping records, determining prices, planning market strategies, making informed decisions based on their data analysis and handling unexpected events. It provides tools for approximations, graphing, word processing and sign creation. A calculator is also available. A wonderful challenge for students at various levels and can be used alone or in groups. This program is very realistic and fun. It encourages estimation and analysis and includes many elements of surprise. It encourages writing, review of past work and shows the importance of record keeping. Students enter a medieval world where they craft their own interactive stories starring kings, queens, jugglers and wild boars. Students select scenes and add stickers such as text, music, sound, dialog and narration to invent their imaginary adventures. The creations can be played back on screen or printed to provide an illustrated book. Students are encouraged to write and can create their own stories complete with action and music. The program is easy to use and the user guide is clear to follow but the it is slow changing from page to page. This is highly motivating with excellent support. Move to top of index

This music program for the Macintosh consists of three diskettes. A hard disk drive is recommended. The program consists of two parts. "Jam Session Synthesizer" simulates a small electronic keyboard which allows users to play single note tunes and to select a variety of instruments, rhythm patterns and special effects. "Studio Session" is the music-composing component of the program which permits editing of existing songs or composing of new material. The program is easy to use and students move through parts of the program using a mouse. The instruction booklet is well-written. An external amplifier and hard disk drive are recommended. The program is most useful to older students, although it is appropriate for guided use by younger students (grades 5-9). Move to top of index

This user-friendly and colourful program allows students to immediately begin drawing and experimenting. It provides advanced animation and sound for students as they gain skills using the program. This program is based on an African folk tale. It contains animation, graphics, songs, and sound effects. Students can click and explore through the program while being introduced to phonics, reading and word recognition. The animation, sound and graphics are very good. The roles of characters in the story might be considered stereotypical. The musical component is strong. Like other stories on CD, it will be a one-time experience for some. It is easy to set terminal configurations. Automatic log-on scripts can be created by having the program memorize commands typed by the user and responses from the host computer. This program assists students with problem solving and reasoning, money transactions, estimation and rounding, 1 to 4 digit addition and subtraction, 1 to 3 digit multiplication and division, and 3D geometry (solids and nets). Although the money transaction section uses American money, reviewers were very positive about the other sections. The activities encourage problem solving at different levels. The small guide book is useful for teachers. This is a high quality production using the computer's potential well - for example, in the demonstration of division, students seem to like the program. This communications program for Apple microcomputers works with either an Apple IIe using a super serial card and external modem or an Apple IIgs using the communications port. It uses a combination of a mouse and pull-down menus. Most functions may be accomplished using open-apple and closed-apple keys on a computer without a mouse. The user is elected mayor and can now act to bring about positive change within the city. Students can choose to build clinics, parks or recreation centres. The mayor can also decide to support new laws or police action. Decisions must be made to fund community programs, museums or sporting events. All decisions have costs and popularity consequences. Students should consult with their team experts and then make a decision or decide when to act or delay. Once a decision has been made, the results can be seen and the public should be informed. The IIgs version requires a great deal of disk swapping which causes it to run slowly. Graphics and text are displayed on the screen as they will be printed (WYSIWYG).
