MOUNT ATHOS:
The monastery of ZOGRAPHOU

According to tradition the founders of this 406 monastery, which is ninth in the hierarchy and is dedicated to saint Georgios were the brothers Ioannis, Moses and Aaron from Ochrid (in the time of Leon VI the Wise, A.D. 880-912). However, the text of the First Typikon makes it clear that the monastery already existed in the l0th century A.D. Concern for its well-being was shown by the Palaiologoi (Michael VIII, Andronikos II and Ioannis V) and by many of the rulers of Hungro-Wallachia.
