Materials:

Chenille yarn:

2 -- 1.4 oz. skeins of desired color

Pony Beads:

32 (for small)

48 (for large)

Crochet Hook Size E (3.5mm) (or size to fit easily through hole in bead)

Small: 7 inches square

Large: 9 inches square

 

Special Stitch used: Beaded Double Crochet (bdc): Place pony bead on hk, insert hk in st and pull lp through, yo and pull through first 2 lps on hk, yo and pull through lp, bead, lp on hk.

 

Beaded Square (make 1 for front of purse):

For both sizes:

Rnd 1: Ch 6, join to form ring; ch 3, in ring, work bdc, dc, *ch 2, dc, bdc, dc in ring; repeat from * twice, join with a sl st in 3rd st of ch. Work in rounds; do not turn.

Rnd 2: For beg shell, sl st in next 2 sts; sl st in ch 2 sp, ch 3; in same sp, work 1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc (beg shell made); *bdc in next st, dc in next st, bdc in next st; in ch 2 sp, work 2dc, ch 2, 2dc (shell); repeat from * around, join as before.

Rnd 3: Sl st in next st and into ch 2 lp, beg shell, *dc in next st, bdc in next st, dc in next 3 sts, bdc in next st, dc in next st, shell in ch 2 sp; repeat from * around, join as before.

 

For small size:

Rnd 4: Beg shell, *dc in next 4 sts, bdc in next st, dc in next st, bdc in next st, dc in next 4 sts, shell in ch 2 sp; repeat from * around, join as before.

Rnd 5: Beg shell, *dc in next 7 sts, bdc in next st, dc in next 7 sts, shell in ch 2 sp; repeat from * around, join as before.

Rnd 6: Beg shell, working ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc; *dc in next 19 sts, shell (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch 2 sp; repeat from * around, join as before.

Rnd 7: Ch 3, *skip 2 sts, sc in next st, ch 3; repeat from * around 3 sides of square, counting ch 2 sps as 1 stitch; sl st in ending ch 2 sp & fasten off.

 

For large size:

Rnd 4: Beg shell, *dc in next 2 sts, bdc in next st, dc in next 5 sts, bdc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, shell in ch 2 sp; repeat from * around, join as before.

Rnd 5: Beg shell, *dc in next 5 sts, bdc in next st, dc in next 3 sts, bdc in next 5 sts, shell in ch 2 sp; repeat from * around, join as before.

Rnd 6: Beg shell, *dc in next 8 sts, bdc in next st, dc in next st, bdc in next st, dc in next 8 sts, shell in ch 2 sp; repeat from * around; join as before.

Rnd 7: Beg shell, *dc in next 11 sts, bdc in next st, dc in next 11 sts, shell in ch 2 sp; repeat from * around; join as before.

Rnd 8: Beg shell, working ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc; *dc in next 27 sts, shell (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch 2 sp; repeat from * around, join as before and fasten off.

Rnd 9: Ch 3, *skip 2 sts, sc in next st, ch 3; repeat from * around 3 sides of square, counting ch 2 sps as 1 stitch; end with a sl st in last ch 2 sp & fasten off.

 

Plain square (make 1 for back of purse):

Work as for beaded square, omitting beads and last rnd. Do not fasten off. Holding front and back wrong sides tog with back facing you, join together as follows:

*Ch 1, sl st in ch 3 lp of front square, ch 1, skip 2 sts on back square, sc in next st on back square; repeat from * around 3 sides, counting ch 2 sps on back square as 1 stitch. End with a sl st in last ch 2 sp. Do not fasten off

 

Handle and top edging:

Ch 51 (or desired length for handle), being careful not to twist ch; join with a sl st in joining on opposite end of purse.

Working across top edge of front square, 1 sl st in each st to the opposite end of purse, sl st in joining

Sc in first ch of handle and in each ch to opposite end of purse; sl st in joining.

Work back along opposite side of handle in ch sps, 1 sc in each ch to opposite end of purse; sl st in joining.

Sl st across top edge of back square to center st; ch 35 for small purse, 45 for large purse (forms closure lp); sl st in same center st; check lp to make sure it reaches to center of square, adjust chs if necessary; continue to sl st across edge to opposite end of purse, sl st in joining and fasten off.

 

Closure button:

Special stitch used: Bead single crochet (bsc): place bead on hk, insert hk in st and pull lp through, yo and pull through lp, bead, lp on hk.

Rnd 1: Leaving a 12" tail for sewing, ch 3, (bsc in 3rd ch from hk, ch 1) 5 times, pull tail tight to form a "button"; sl st in first bsc and fasten off. Sew button to center of front square over rnd 1. Place closure loop around button to fasten purse closed
