Throughout the site, you will come across the term "degrees" when we refer to your contacts. Obviously, we aren't talking about anybody's body temperature. What we do mean is the proximity of your relationship to someone else. So, someone in your first degree is someone that you know directly, like your mother, husband, employer, business contact, etc. These are the contacts that you list or that list you. Someone in your second degree is a person that someone in your first degree knows directly, like your brother's co-worker. Likewise, someone in your third degree is a person that someone in your second degree knows directly, like your daughter's friend's client.
We could go on and on, and seeing how our name is "sixdegrees," you might think we should, but in the real world of networking any connection beyond the third degree is often very thin, at best. That's why sixdegrees searches only go to the third degree. After all, would that hiring partner really care if your friend's brother's cousin's client's wife's hairdresser knows his mother? (And if they did care, would you really want to work for someone like that?)
