Loki vs. Loki Entertainment Fri Dec 11 10:24:26 1998 CST |
I didn't realize that there was confusion on this, but Loki of Monolith Productions and Loki Entertainment are in no way affiliated. Loki (the Lith guy) updated his .plan yesterday and mentioned the confusion:
no, the 'Loki Entertainment' that wants to do Linux ports of commercial games is NOT, despite what people might think, connected to me in any way whatsoever.
I'll probably have trouble convincing people of that since I have a reputation as a die-hard Linux supporter, but I swear it's true.

Loki Software Press Release Thu Dec 10 11:09:23 1998 CST |
If I were to open my eyes and take a closer look at my own mailbox I would have seen that I had Loki's press release sitting right there. It was sent from their press contact Linda Marcus. Take a look at it, it includes a lot of information and quotes that I was wondering about before.

Shogo Server Port Thu Dec 10 10:44:02 1998 CST |
Loki updated his .plan on Monday with an update on the Linux port of the dedicated Shogo server. Highlights include:
- finished porting 'stdlith' (internal utilities)
- finished porting all the memory management stuff
- finished porting something to use .so files instead of DLLs
- rewritten the GameSpyMgr libraries
- currently concentrating on tcpdriver.cpp, the core of the TCP networking code
He adds a nice comment at the end:
if I take a little longer to reply to mod community e-mails than I have in the past, you'll know what it is that has my attention elsewhere. :)
Sounds like he has the motivation to get this one done! Thanks to Rifter for pointing out that I haven't been keeping up on plan updates.

Loki Software Thu Dec 10 10:22:40 1998 CST |
Ryan J. Evans sent a quick email pointing out Loki Software. There isn't much information on their page quite yet, but they are claiming to be the "first and only company dedicated to commercially porting top selling computer games to the Linux." It doesn't appear that they have started in on any projects or that they're fully staffed yet so I wouldn't exactly consider it time to celebrate, but it's a start. I'm not sure where the quotes came from, but you might want to check out "Linux Garners Game Support" over at MaximumPC for some quotes from Loki's president. (thanks to Lisics for this link)

Heretic 2 Wed Dec 09 10:44:55 1998 CST |
John Scott of Raven Software updated his .finger and at the end included the following in addressing Heretic 2 issues:
Linux version. We are all Windows peeps here at Raven. We are extremely unlikely to do one, although subcontracting this out may be an option. What is involved in doing a Linux port? All our servers are NT based, so testing would be another problem.
If you have any good suggestions for them drop him a line, but please don't flame the hell out of him with "please please please port it" emails, they don't need that, they've apparently considered the idea, now the need hard facts as to what's involved with it.

Unreal Server Sun Dec 06 07:48:57 1998 CST |
On the Unreal Technology, they have a brief blurb on the possible Unreal Linux server port.
Jack "Mek" Porter has come here from Australia for a few months to help with the Unreal Tournament programming, and is currently working on some cool new mouse-based user interface code. He is a big Linux fan, and is talking with Brandon Reinhart about cooperating on a native Linux port of the Unreal server.
Thanks to Medved for this info.
