Today, The Anniston Star's Editorial Board offers four recommendations in advance of Tuesday's statewide runoff elections.

GOVERNOR Republican: Robert Bentley, an extremely conservative two-term state legislator from Tuscaloosa, is to liberalism what Nick Saban is to Auburn football.

Yet, Bentley's Republican gubernatorial runoff foe is portraying him as "more liberal than you know." This page and other news outlets have already debunked Bradley Byrne's allegations against Bentley.

Of course, the most obvious response is the many benefits liberalism has delivered to the state and the nation. We can presume none of these so-called proud Alabama conservatives dislike the fruits of liberal workers, who we can thank for securing the 40-hour work week, child-labor laws, workplace safety laws, laws protecting clear skies and clean water and so on.

Of course, waving the L-word around like a bloody shirt is just Alabama boilerplate campaigning. The really disappointing part is that Byrne feels it necessary to attempt to campaign to Bentley's right.

After all, Byrne has served admirably as a member of the state Board of Education, the state Senate and, most recently, as chancellor of the two-year college system. Byrne is a can-do public official who has shown the ability to set aside blind partisanship when it matters.

For these reasons, this page recommended his candidacy for the June 1 Republican primary. We do so again ahead of Tuesday's runoff election. Yet, we also wish to suggest that Byrne campaign as he is, not as he thinks the voters in the season of tea partying want him to be.

ATTORNEY GENERAL Democrat: Tuesday's election will decide if James Anderson or Giles Perkins faces Luther Strange in this fall's general election for state attorney general. (The Star's June 1 primary recommendation, Michel Nicrosi, failed to make the runoff.)

Perkins is a Birmingham attorney who is committed to ensuring full compliance with the state's open-government laws. He also promises to remove the politics from the AG's office.

The Star recommends Giles Perkins.

AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER Republican: Dorman Grace and John McMillan square off in Tuesday's primary runoff. Oddly enough, their third primary opponent, Dale Peterson, may be better known because of his over-the-top online ads. For those tired of the politics of frothing, the GOP runoff is happy news that such tactics don't always win.

Grace is a widely respected third-generation farmer from Jasper. We repeat our recommendation from the primary election.

PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION, PLACE 1 Republican: The race pits Twinkle Cavanaugh and Stephen Evans. Cavanaugh, former chair of the state Republican Party, has twice run for statewide office and twice lost in those bids. Evans is a little-known candidate who works as a retirement planner in Dothan; he has roots in Talladega County.
