This update was mailed March 27, 2007 to all NEA-Alaska members .

The NEA-Alaska Delegate Assembly met on February 2, 2007 in Anchorage and passed four priority one New Business items (NBI’s).  The NBI’s are as follows:

07-25: Opposition to the April 3, 2007 advisory vote

STATUS:

The legislature has decided to move forward and spend $1,150,000 on an “advisory” vote on April 3, 2007.  All Alaskans should vote NO!

ACTION:

Let’s make it to the polls on April 3rd to cast a strong NO vote on this unnecessary and wasteful advisory vote!  This is a matter of equal pay for equal work and allowing families that currently have medical benefits to keep them.

07-28: Guaranteed Base Student Allocation

STATUS:  There have been several pieces of legislation introduced to fund schools, including SB 1            (Wilken) for a Base Student Allocation of $5,810 and HB 142 (Gara and Kawasaki) for a BSA of $5,810 with inflation proofing.
ACTION: Please correspond with your lawmakers to advocate for a BSA of $5,953.

07-40 Retirement System to Attract & Retain Quality Public Employees

STATUS: NEA-Alaska continues to work with all public employee labor groups to return Alaska to a defined benefit (DB) plan.
ACTION:  Connect with your lawmakers today demanding a return to a defined benefit plan!

07-08: Rural Teacher Housing

STATUS:  NEA-Alaska continues to work with Alaska’s congressional delegation to address the needs for healthy, safe and secure living environments throughout Alaska.
ACTION:  This is a federal issue.  Please communicate with Senators Stevens and Murkowski and                      Congressman Young.  You can do this via our website at www.neaalaska.org.

Please go to the polls on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 and protect the constitutional rights of all Alaskans by voting NO on the statewide advisory vote.

Please continue your advocacy on behalf of K-12 education throughout Alaska and give us a call if you need more information.
