Andros Island
Andros Island is the eco-tourism capital of The Bahamas and the 5th largest island in the Caribbean. It’s the closest major island to Nassau but one of the least developed in the Bahamas. It lies about 170 miles southeast of Miami and just 20 miles west and south of Nassau.
Most of the interior is unexplored and development is mainly limited to the east coast. Andros “The Sleeping Giant” is over 100 miles long and 40 miles wide covering 2300 square miles. 3 large waterways known as North, Middle & South “Bights” divide the island into North Andros, Mangrove Cay and South Andros Island. These Bights are teeming with fish making Andros a world class fishing and diving destination.
The West Side National Park protects 1.5 million acres and ensures the island ecosystem is protected for future generations.
Please note: Travel between North Andros and South Andros Island in limited to private charter. If traveling to South Andros Island you must fly into Congo Town Airport.
South Andros Island
Perhaps the greatest attraction is the Andros Barrier reef, the 3rd largest in the world. The variety of shallow reef dives, ocean and inland blue holes and wall diving in the Tongue of the Ocean make Andros the best diving destination in the Bahamas. The Tongue of the Ocean is a vast underwater canyon more than a mile deep offering deep sea fishing and deep ocean diving within a mile or two of shore.
Andros is otherwise surrounded by the shallow seas of The Great Bahama Bank. This combination of barrier reef and sand banks provides the island with significant protection from tropical storms, hurricanes and high seas. If you are looking for a quiet place with an abundance of eco-tourism and relaxation, South Andros Island is the place to explore. More than 80% of South Andros Island is preserved in the West Side National Park.
