What We Do
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) operates state prisons, state jails, parole, and provides funding and certain oversight of community supervision (previously known as adult probation).

TDCJ primarily supervises adult offenders (persons 17 or older) assigned to state supervision. For information about the juvenile justice system, visit the Texas Youth Commission or Texas Juvenile Probation Commission websites. For information about county jails, contact the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

Finding Information
The TDCJ website describes the agency's functions: programs involved; statistical information; publications; assistance for crime victims and their family and friends; guidance for offenders' families; and links to other criminal justice sites including the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles.
