Referees for EURO 2000 Final Tournament appointed

At the end of its Advanced Course for Top-Class Referees which has been staged in Malta since last Sunday, UEFA has, today, announced the names of the match officials who have been appointed for the European Championship finals to be played in Belgium and the Netherlands this summer.

Select group
UEFA’s ‘tactics’ for this year’s final tournament have changed radically since the EURO 96 finals, when the 31 matches were handled by 24 referees who were flown into England for specific fixtures. This time, UEFA aims to ensure the best possible handling of matches as well as uniform application of the laws of the game by selecting a small group of top-class referees who have proved themselves via extensive track records at international level. Whereas only seven referees handled more than one fixture at EURO 96, the 12 referees selected should, in principle, take charge of several matches during the tournament.
In addition to the 12 referees, UEFA has appointed 16 assistant referees plus four fourth Officials. They will be joined at EURO 2000™ by one referee and one assistant referee to be appointed by the African Confederation, CAF. This forms part of the co-operation programme between UEFA and CAF which, among other things, has already led to the presence of a European referee (Kim Milton Nielsen of Denmark in 1998 and Alain Sars of France earlier this month) at the last two final rounds of the African Cup of Nations.

Preparations set to start
From now until EURO 2000™ kicks off in June, the match officials who have been appointed will not officiate at any match involving any of the 16 finalists.
Preparations for the final tournament will accelerate at the end of March, when a Panel of Experts will meet in order to establish a series of practical instructions aimed at ensuring that matches are efficiently handled. The Panel of Experts will be formed by two members of UEFA’s Referees’ Committee, two active international referees, two renowned coaches and two former international players. The coaches and players will be named shortly.
All 34 of the match officials selected will then get together in Brussels from 28-30 April for a Seminar which will cover all physical and technical aspects of the final tournament. The instructions given to the referees – based on the guidelines formulated by the Panel of Experts – will be passed on to the 16 national associations who will be competing in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Belgium base for tournament
During the tournament itself, the match officials will stay at a centre just outside Brussels, where they will have a full back-up team including a doctor, three ‘physios’, two fitness trainers, a video technician and a UEFA Media Officer, in addition to the members of the UEFA Referees’ Committee who will help them to analyse each and every game played during the tournament.
