Best Story

Starcraft
Publisher: Blizzard
Developer: Blizzard

"I have played many, many games in my lifetime, but none has been as well written as Starcraft."
- David Waldo, GameSpot Player Review

Quite a few nominees qualified for best story this year. After all, it was the year content took precedence over form. But none found a more interesting means of telling a story than Blizzard's Starcraft. Making a real-time strategy game an engrossing piece of storytelling is no easy task, but Blizzard did just that. Script and story writers Chris Metzen and James Phinney used a series of in-mission dialogues, stunning cutscenes, and well-written mission briefings to move Starcraft's story along. And it was an excellent story at that, filled with honor, betrayal, and many memorable characters.

Best Graphics (Technical Excellence)

Unreal
Publisher: GT Interactive
Developer: Epic Mega Games

"The palette is bright and varied, while the textures are intricate and well defined."
- Tahsin Shamma, GameSpot Review

The many years spent in development didn't age Unreal's graphics any. Six months after its release (an eon in computer gaming), Unreal still remains one of the most visually stunning games available. The textures are crisp, the frame rate is great, and the lighting effects are still incredible. Simply look up in the sky during one of Unreal's outdoor levels. Then, go back and do the same with almost any other first-person shooter. Graphically, Unreal was more than worth the wait.

Best Graphics (Artistic Design)

Grim Fandango
Publisher: LucasArts
Developer: LucasArts

"The visual design is consistently great, drawing upon various Latin American sources and using them to create modern buildings and vehicles."
- Ron Dulin, GameSpot Review

Like its music, Grim Fandango's artistic design resulted from many seemingly disparate influences coming together to create a truly unique whole. Take the flowery and simple art from the Day of the Dead celebration, the angularity of Aztec stonework, and gargantuan tongue-wagging creatures inspired by Big Daddy Roth. Then, apply these concepts to modern structures such as office buildings, cruise ships, and casinos. Grim Fandango's artists (led by art director Peter Tsacle) not only accomplished this complex feat, but did it in such a way that the end result is an organic and beautiful world.
