New Version of Pokémon And Limited Edition Game Boy® Color Available This Fall

REDMOND, Wash., Oct. 4, 1999 - The next chapter in the worldwide Pokémon phenomenon is on its way to a Game Boy Color near you. Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition features the Pokémon characters in enhanced color while following the premise of the top-rated animated television series. The game, bundled with a limited edition two-toned Game Boy Color hardware casing features popular Pokémon characters such as Pikachu and Jigglypuff around the frame of the screen. The hardware bundle will be available on October 25 for a suggested retail price of $109.95. The game will also be sold separately and available on October 18 for a suggested retail price of $29.95.

Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition plays just like the original Red and Blue versions, but the star of the Pokémon television series, Pikachu, accompanies the player throughout the game.

"Now fans everywhere can finally experience the role-playing fun from the same point of view as on their favorite TV show," says Peter Main, Nintendo's executive vice president, sales and marketing. "Pokémon Yellow, along with the limited edition Game Boy Color are guaranteed collector's items and are bound to keep Pokémon at the top of the sales charts this fall."

The game play in Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition begins as Professor Oak gives players a wild Pikachu that they must train and keep happy as they travel in search of Pokémon. In order to catch all 150 Pokémon, players need to trade with both the Red and Blue versions via the Game Link Cable™. Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition is compatible with both the Red and Blue games, allowing players to battle and trade with more than one friend. The game is also playable on the Game Boy pocket.

Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition also features new challenges that only work when two Yellow versions are linked together. In the new Colosseum 2 mode, players can battle a friend for the Poké Cup, Pika Cup and Petit Cup titles. Players can also print out their Pokédex and other hidden items using the Game Boy Printer.
