What the World Jokes About

We scanned last week's user search logs for queries containing the word "joke."

The 40 most popular results are below, with each topic's percentage of the overall top-40 joke traffic. Let's just get right to the meat; we'll add a few comments at the end.

29.0%   Dirty
14.9%   Blonde
7.7%    Funny
7.3%    Yo Mama
4.1%    Clean

3.6%    Racist/Ethnic
3.2%    Joke of the Day
3.0%    Sick/Tasteless
2.7%    Sex
2.6%    Practical Jokes

2.2%    Redneck
1.7%    Investment
1.4%    Wedding
1.3%    Fat
1.2%    Birthday

1.2%    Golf
1.1%    Clinton
0.9%    Retirement
0.9%    Knock Knock
0.8%    Men

0.7%    Lawyer
0.6%    Viagra
0.6%    Ford
0.6%    Computer
0.6%    Kids

0.6%    Stupid
0.6%    Little Johnny
0.5%    Disney
0.5%    School
0.5%    Rude

0.4%    Graduation
0.4%    Military
0.4%    Police
0.4%    Lightbulb
0.4%    Women

0.3%    Newfie
0.3%    Political
0.3%    Animal
0.3%    Math
0.3%    Desi

So we see that both dirty and clean make the top 5, along with blondes and the surprising upstart Yo Mama. (A sample of the latter: "Yo mama so ugly, the psychiatrist makes her lie face-down.")

As for those people entering "funny jokes," well, your guess is as good as ours. Perhaps those same people sometimes search for "unfunny jokes."

We're surprised to see President Clinton down so low, right between golf and retirement -- though those two items do represent what he'll be up to about a year from now. Speaking of presidents, those Ford joke requests are from Chevrolet drivers, not from devotees of our 38th president.

A few regional specialties: Newfie jokes are about the good people of Newfoundland. The jokes seem to be Canada's answer to the Iowa vs. Illinois jokes you see in U.S.A. And Desi jokes have nothing to do with Lucille Ball -- "Desi" is a cheerful slang term used by Indians and Pakistanis to describe themselves.

Finally, who are all these people looking for investment jokes? In this market? Well, perhaps it's better than jumping from skyscapers.
